Do shoes matter?

Wed Jul 04, 2007 4:03 am

Do shoes actually influence the stats and ability or are they just a pointless visual candy?

It's purely for looks. I wouldn't call it pointless though, it certainly adds to the realism of the game..

I dunno... I think I have to go with 2K6 on that one. I used to play basketball in highschool and I personally find that shoes do matter a LOT especially when it comes to edge, accelleration and jumping. I personalloy think its pretty dumb not only to put 200+ shoes in the game but also charge hard earned points for them!? Lamo!!! :? (N)

I play real basketball a lot to and trust me shoes do not matter. I've been to plenty of tournaments and played against amazing kids that were wearing some shitty shoes with tape on them and stuff. While some kids have the nicest shoes in the world and completely suck. And I'm not sure why you brought 2k6 into this?

If we are talking about streetballing on a pavement I completely agree with you... but if you are saying that the traction of a worn off snickers on the court is the same as let's say Air Jordan's I would have to say you are full of it.

I also played several local 3-3 intramurals and saw a handful of cocky streetballers showing up in their taped snickers. Well they ice-skate around until they end up face down on the court or worse with an injury.

P.S. I brought up 2K cause they made use of that option. All I'm saying is that if you have such an amazing selection of authentic shoes why not make some use of it. :?

Well i mean like in games. Ive seen guys in games playing with taped up shoes and doing really good. Shoes mean a lot when it comes to certain environmental conditions, but when it comes to skills it doesn't mean anything.

No argument here. (Y) The botom line is: can a player drive, can he shoot can he handle the ball. All I'm saying is on the court the same person with excellent shoes vs taped worn off snickers will be more agile, have better speed and thus be a more dangerous presence on the court.

It's like when they use low cut for guards for agility, maneuverability and speed cause it gives you more freedom around ankles, on the other hand centers and PF usually wear hi's for stability and also injury prevention around ankles.

So it would be nice if EA explores that function. It would be much more fun and useful if you could amount let's say 2,000 points and finally unlock a low model that will allow your guards to be quicker on the court... I just hate that I bust my thumbs :) scoring with every member of my team or get a triple double and all I get is some visual candy that suppose to appeal to my esthetic senses of realism and a couple of wallpapers that I probably could have done better anyway :)

Yeah I feel you, but that would be kind of stupid if certain shoes made you play better when it would be an unfair advantage, because no players in the nba wear taped up old shoes. If that was the case then everyone would have their quickness rating boosted.

Sorry for a double post I guess I was just trigger happy (a problem off and on the court :) )

I got a couple of good points from a highschool coach that I know. As soon as I mentioned the topic he laughed and said that no professional athlete would ever admit that shoes make an impact for the fear of looking like a cheater and also to safe guard his personal secrets. After several jokes at my expense here is what he had to say (I'm gonna try to be as accurate as possible about what he said):

To say that shoes make a huge impact on the players game is ridiculous: player's shooting doesn't get better, his passing doesn't get better, his understanding of the game doesn't become better BUT to say that it has NO impact is also not true. "Why do Nike and Adidas drop so much money on their development departments?" he asked me.

He also compared the old school adidas Promodel with the latest Nike and Adidas lines:

first of all you are 1inch+ higher off the ground and closer to the sun :), secondly the combination of material and shape gives you a trampoline-like sensation especially on a two-step and last but not the least they are much lighter. He even gave me an example of a player he had some years ago, who suddenly exploded in the midseason: started getting down the court faster for D and started get better rebounding. So he asked him if the kid was working out outside of the practices and the kid just said: "I got lighter shoes, coach."

So I still stand by my opinion that EA should explore this option in their next release. And I'm not talking about ridiculous effects like +10 Dunking ability or +15 Off. Awareness but let's say guard shoes +2 agility but -2 hardiness, hi shoes +2 hardiness but -2 speed, light shoes +2 jump and so on.

P.S. Here is an interesting link for your consideration:
