AUXERRE, August 27 (Ligue 1) - Olympique Lyonnais is now fourth in the league table as they recorded a 3-1 win over AJ Auxerre at the Stade Abbe-Deschamps.

Both sides scored in a thrilling final minute but an early goal from Fred and a second from Florent Malouda had already ensured the points for Gérard Houllier's side.

The hosts started strongly and it was a surprise when Lyon, who began their league season with also a 3-1 win over RC Lens in the first round of matches, took the lead.

The home defence failed to clear the ball, allowing Fred to blast the ball through a crowded box and beyond Fabien Cool in the Auxerre goal.

That proved a watershed moment for Lyon, whose confidence was boosted by the goal.

Just four minutes had elapsed when Sylvain Wiltord was presented with the chance to double the lead; the Frenchman controlled a pass from Juninho with the goal gaping but the action was ruled out: offside.

Auxerre hit back and continued to play some good football without creating any clear chances, and his luck got no better when in the 22nd minute a terrible defensive mix-up allowed former Guingamp midfielder Malouda a clear sight of an unmarked goal, making it 2-0.

John Carew's unique strike also found the back of the net; the Norwegian entered for Sidney Govou.

The hosts eventually scored with seconds to go when some good build-up play left Ludovic Genest to drive home thanks to a header, but the points were already heading to Lyon.

LYON, September 3 (Ligue 1) - Attacking duo Fred and Sidney Govou netted goals as Lyon saw off Monaco to move to the top of the table.

Although it is early days and at least seven teams can draw level or even pass Houllier's side in the table next week, seeing the five-time defending champions already in full flight is an ominous sign for the rest of Ligue 1.

Monaco won two of the four games they played, and they were always up against it after falling behind in the 18th minute to a goal from Fred.

The pressure had been gradually building on the Monaco defence and it was no surprise to see Lyon take the lead when the Brazilian shot home Govou's corner.

Juninho, arguably the world's leading dead-ball specialist, almost doubled Lyon's lead just after the half-hour with a free-kick, which Monaco goalkeeper Flavio Roma punched away with both fists.

Roma was also called into action just before half-time to deny Fred again, after the striker had been put through one-on-one by a pass from Juninho.

In the last minute of the first half, Monaco's Gael Givet earned a yellow card after a strong foul on Govou.

The second half was a similar story, with Lyon making all the running and Monaco being pegged back.

Lyon really should have had the game sewn up well and they almost paid for their inability to net a second goal, when Marco Di Vaio headed against the Lyon post in the 46th minute, just after the second half started.

That proved to be the wake-up call Lyon needed as just two minutes later they doubled their lead and wrapped up their third win in four matches thanks to Govou.
