THE GAME: GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS vs. LOS ANGELES LAKERS
The Warriors hosted their famous Californian rivals in the Arena in Oakland, after having won their last 7 games of the season. They started well in this one as, well, being
6-0 up in the first 2 minutes. The Lakers did not lose touch with the score, though, and led by the surprisingly energetic
Brian Grant, managed to come up ahead
14 – 16 around mid-quarter. From then and up until the end of the first 12 minutes,
Baron Davis and Jason Richardson put on their own backcourt show, with the former passing and the latter executing,
closing the quarter 27 – 23 for Golden State. In the second period, LA managed to detain those two on defense, and led by the
surging Kobe Bryant on offense, regained the lead in a matter of minutes. Bryant finished the half with 18 points and great defense on J-Rich, while
Grant and Mihm contained Troy Murphy, helping
the visitors lead 39 – 46 at halftime.
Kobe’s shooting and driving to the basket with purpose resulted in the Lakers’ outscoring their opponents in the first half…
The second half started with Los Angeles continuing exactly where they left off in the end of the first. This time Kobe was seconded on offense by
Chucky Atkins and his effective perimeter shooting. The visitors were up by 14,
43 – 57 , three minutes into the 3rd and were looking to break further away. But thankfully for the Warriors, their defense woke up and limited Bryant’s touches, while on offense
Baron Davis was on fire from outside, passing for 5 assist in the meantime. With
Richardson and Murphy picking up the pace as well near the end of the quarter, Golden State closed in on their opposition,
70 – 75 at the end of 3. During the final period of the contest, the home team continued to push for a total comeback, spearheaded by
Troy Murphy who got himself a lot of hustle points, courtesy of his offensive rebounding. Kobe would not give up the fight, though, carrying his team throughout the end . It was close in the final stretches, with the deadlock being broken by some
crucial three pointers by Mike Dunleavy, that made it
98 – 92 with 1:18 to go. From then on, the Lakers would keep sending Davis to the free throw line, only to allow him to close the deal,
103 – 94 for Golden State in the end.
Troy Murphy was a vital cog in a well-oiled Golden State machine in the second half, during which tey rallied to victory...
