NLSC Podcast #519: Infinite NBA Modes To Keep Us Hooked

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

We're tipping things off this week with a strange (but not altogether surprising) incident on Twitter/X. Indeed, the quality of discourse on social media is on our minds this week, as we feel compelled to respond to the latest ridiculous narrative being pushed about Michael Jordan and NBA history. We also check in with Troydan's quest to pull a 100 Overall card in NBA 2K24 MyTEAM, and discuss the new mobile game, NBA Infinite. In this week's mailbag/featured discussion, we join the community in reminiscing about the basketball video game modes that have kept us hooked over the years, and the titles that we played them in.

NLSC Podcast #520: Best Generation of NBA Live & NBA 2K

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

Which generation produced the best NBA Live and NBA 2K games? This week, we join the community in nominating the golden age for each series. We also recap our exciting co-op Parsec sessions with NBA Live 2000 PC and NBA 2K2 for GameCube, which in turn leads us to reflect on the 2000 Phoenix Suns and the fantastic NBA of the 80s. Additionally, we check in with Troydan's ongoing quest to pull 100 Overall MyTEAM cards, discuss the drawbacks of digital ownership and the need for physical media, and note an unfortunate side effect of declining the new Terms of Service in NBA 2K24.

NLSC Podcast #521: No NBA License? No Problem!

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

Could an unlicensed basketball video game possibly provide a viable alternative to NBA 2K, assuming that it had great gameplay, deep customisation and sharing options, a robust franchise mode, and a price tag of $39.99 USD? This week, we join the community in discussing this very intriguing idea, while drawing comparisons to old titles such as World League Basketball and other unlicensed sports games. It's safe to say that there's interest in the concept, but certainly some valid concerns as well. We also take a look back at NBA 2K8 for PlayStation 3 following a co-op Parsec session that sadly ended far too abruptly, and share an encouraging injury update with our listeners.

NLSC Podcast #522: Is PC Gaming Worth It In 2024?

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

Obviously we're big fans of and advocates for PC gaming, but are the benefits worth the drawbacks and potential expense in 2024? You can probably guess our short answer to that question, but nevertheless, this week we join the community in discussing the pros and cons of PC gaming - basketball and otherwise - while also recommending price ranges for anyone in the market for a new rig. We also share our expectations as far as NBA 2K25 coming out on PC and possibly being a port of the PlayStation 5/Xbox Series X version, talk about Steam sales and other bargain hunting, and preview some roster projects for NBA 2K6 on Xbox 360 while once again encouraging minimalist modding on all platforms.

NLSC Podcast #523: Our All-Time Favourite NBA Jerseys

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

Through decades of watching real basketball and playing basketball video games alike, we've become fans of a number of memorable uniforms. To that end, this week we join the community in naming our top three favourite NBA jerseys of all-time, along with some honourable mentions that also definitely rank up there for us. Some of the choices may be surprising, especially given the reputation of one uniform in particular! We also discuss the players that made those jerseys so iconic, and reflect on how 90s styles are seemingly making a comeback in the 2020s despite so many people trying to tear down that era in the NBA.

NLSC Podcast #524: NBA Jam & Borrowing From Other Games

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

After feeling inspired to revisit the Super Nintendo version of the original NBA Jam, we were reminded of just how fun the game still is in 2024...and also, just how unfair it can be when the AI is determined to win and begins rubber-banding! Once again we draw comparisons to the NBA Playgrounds games, while a couple of interesting ratings led us to dive into some statistics from the 1993 season. We also join the community in discussing which ideas we'd take from other sports games - from modes and features to settings and roster customisation options - to improve future NBA 2K releases (and potentially, a new NBA Live some day as well).

NLSC Podcast #525: Check My Stats

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

Which basketball video games have been the easiest and hardest to put up stats in over the years? This week, we join the community in discussing the titles that stick out in our minds, as well as the statistics that either eluded us or seemingly piled up way too easily. Additionally, following a session with Virtua NBA - an arcade release that a few people in our community have taken an interest in lately - we give our thoughts on what is certainly an intriguing game. We also provide an update on our journey in the original NBA Jam, pick our ideal hoops games for an annual tournament, and reflect on how it feels to shelve a beloved favourite that's unfortunately grown stale.

NLSC Podcast #526: Worst Voices of the Virtual Hardwood

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

Who are the worst and most annoying commentators to be stuck listening to in basketball video games? This week, we join the community in picking our least favourite voices of the virtual hardwood, whether it's due to the opinions that they share, their delivery in the booth, or simply the sound of their voice. Of course, it probably won't come as a huge surprise that we're generally not fans of them in real life, either! We also recap a fun session with Basketball Classics that concluded in exciting fashion, and quiz the community on the top-rated point guards in NBA 2K9. Not to sound like a clickbait article, but the answers - and at least one noteworthy omission - may shock you!

NLSC Podcast #527: 2K Pulls Kobe & Overused Basketball Jargon

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

MyTEAM gamers are up in arms once again, as 2K has pulled a Kobe Bryant card that a pre-release developer insight for NBA 2K24 promoted as the top Collector Level reward, coming in Season 6. We share our thoughts on the situation and 2K's trademark lack of communication, drawing comparisons once again to the Pink Diamond fiasco in NBA 2K19. Talk of Take-Two's greed also has us looking beyond the virtual hardwood, as Top Spin 2K25 has presented some familiar issues. In our main discussion this week, we join the community in listing some of the most overused jargon in basketball discourse. If these terms come up when talking about hoops, it's not going to be a fun or thoughtful conversation!

NLSC Podcast #528: Best Three-Point Shooters in Video Game History

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

A recent interview with EA's CEO Andrew Wilson bleakly hints at a future where games are riddled with intrusive ads. We've already seen attempts at this before, but as you can imagine, we're not thrilled at the possibility of it becoming commonplace! However, most of this week's show is dedicated to the deadeyes from downtown on the virtual hardwood, as we join the community in reminiscing about the best three-point shooters in the history of basketball video games. We also recall the players that we preferred to overwrite when customising the rosters in classic titles, whether we were making current roster updates or putting ourselves and our friends into the NBA.

NLSC Podcast #529: Classic Seasons, Legendary Challenges, & Struggling Stars

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

Which stars, past or present, have been harder to use in basketball video games than they should've been? This week, we join the community in recalling our most memorable examples of struggling stars on the virtual hardwood, and what made them so difficult to dominate with. We also recap a fun Parsec session of NBA 2K19, in which we used the 1986 roster from the Classic Seasons project. On a less positive note, there's the dismaying news that NBA 2K24 has been extremely profitable for Take-Two despite the game receiving significant backlash and criticism from the community. Along with some damning remarks from someone who has been involved with the NextMaker program, it doesn't fill us with hope for future releases.

NLSC Podcast #530: Replaying NBA History With Modern Gaming Tech

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

If a basketball video game featuring modern technology but a past setting - from rosters to modes to presentation - was ever to be released, which year would you want it to be? This week, we join the community in sharing our choices of legendary seasons to re-live on the virtual hardwood. We also react to the announcement of NBA Superstars, an upcoming arcade basketball game in the style of NBA Jam. What do we make of the gameplay in the trailer, and can it fill a void in the basketball gaming space? We also discuss having interactions with former NBA players on social media - both positive and negative - and provide a PSA for our fellow basketball gamers who may be having a rough time right now.

NLSC Podcast #531: EA College Football Now, EA College Basketball Next?

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

With EA Sports College Football 25 generating some positive buzz with gamers, could it lead to EA Sports bringing back its college basketball series as well? For that matter, could the enthusiasm and a successful launch lead to NBA Live finally making its return as EA seemingly looks to expand its lineup? This week, we join the community in discussing EA Sports potentially returning to the virtual hardwood, whether we’d prefer an NBA or college basketball game, and some of our expectations for such a comeback. We also name our all-time NBA enforcer starting fives, and pay tribute to the late, great Bill Walton, who sadly passed away last week following a battle with cancer.

NLSC Podcast #532: How We Got Hooked On Basketball Games

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

Which basketball video games made you fall in love with the genre? This week, we join the community in reminiscing about the titles that got us hooked on the virtual hardwood, our go-to teams and players, and some of the special memories that we made with them. This includes sharing some stories about fake articles based on our seasons, and an unlikely comeback for a Boston Celtics legend during the 1995 campaign in NBA Live 95 PC! Speaking of the Celtics, we also share a few thoughts on the 2024 NBA Finals, which leads us to recall some of the underdog Boston teams from the mid-to-late 90s and early 2000s, and discuss notable moves and Draft picks the team made during their rebuilding attempts.

NLSC Podcast #533: Would They Be Better Today?

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

Which NBA players from past decades would be even better if they competed in today’s league, with all of the changes to the rules and the style of play? This week, we join the community in picking five players – be they superstars, fringe All-Stars and other very good players, solid role players, or even benchwarmers – that we believe would really thrive in the modern NBA. Speaking of players who would be fantastic in any era, we also pay tribute to the late, great Jerry West, the inspiration for the NBA logo and one of the most successful individuals the league has ever seen on the court, on the sidelines, and in the front office.

NLSC Podcast #534: Appreciating History, Debunking Narratives

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

We had a blast this past week playing a co-op game of NBA 2K10 PC over Parsec, using a 1997 season roster. We reflect on how the game is an overlooked gem, and the brilliance of retro season mods in general. Indeed, it seems there's more and more interest in revisiting classic games and memorable seasons with retro roster mods recently, and we're all for it! To that end, this week we join the community in discussing what's been drawing us to old favourites and classic seasons in the NBA. We also talk about the importance of appreciating history and note how video games play a role in that, as well as touch on the need to debunk ridiculous narratives such as the recent hit piece on Michael Jordan.

NLSC Podcast #535: They Liked It, You Didn't

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

While there have been some outstanding basketball video games throughout the years, none of them have been universally liked, and sometimes you just won't vibe with a title that most other gamers seem to enjoy. This week, we join the community in discussing some of the games that have been popular with our fellow virtual hardwood enthusiasts, but for one reason or another, we just couldn't get into. We also share some more stories of playing real basketball, and react to an illuminating article that details some of the sneaky tactics that occur behind the scenes in games with pushy recurrent revenue mechanics, some of which may well be employed by Take-Two.

NLSC Podcast #536: NBA 2K League Fails To Meet Expectations

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

The NBA 2K League has been put on hiatus until 2025, an announcement that came as a surprise to both league players and everyone else involved. This week, we join the community in discussing how and why the NBA 2K League failed to meet some incredibly lofty expectations, despite the backing of the NBA. We also recap a game of NBA Live 10 in which we took on Argentina with Team USA, as well as an NBA 2K10 session in which we ran back a showdown between the Chicago Bulls and Utah Jazz using the fantastic 1997 season mod. There's also some fun trivia to share, along with a PSA to grab the digital version of NCAA Basketball 09: March Madness Edition from the Xbox Live Marketplace while you still can.

NLSC Podcast #537: NBA 2K25 New Gen Coming To PC

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

The first details about NBA 2K25 have been revealed, and they've brought some extremely exciting news: the New Gen version is coming to PC! This week, we join the community in discussing this much-anticipated announcement, including what it will mean for a modding community that's been aching for a PlayStation 5/Xbox Series X port. It's not the only noteworthy news of course, as we already have the system requirements, confirmation of no crossplay on PC, and word of a new era coming in MyNBA which naturally has us speculating as to what it will be. We also react to the cover players and art, and touch on some other tidbits that we've noticed such as combined pre-orders on console, and purported Steam Deck optimisation.

NLSC Podcast #538: Y2K Fun & New PC Hoops

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

As we wait for the NBA 2K25 preview season to kick into high gear, we have another PC basketball game to keep an eye on: Full Court Heroes, a retro-style 5-on-5 game in the vein of Basketball Classics. Since the demo is already available on Steam, we share a few thoughts on its gameplay, fictional teams, and planned modding capabilities, as well as what we want to see from the full version. We also recap a session in which we played NBA Live 2000 PC and NBA 2K for the Dreamcast back-to-back, leading us to compare the two games and reflect on the intertwined history of NBA Live and NBA 2K. Finally, in this week's mailbag, we ask the community about double-dipping with NBA 2K25 on PC and console.

NLSC Podcast #539: The Run: Got Next; A Worthy NBA Street Successor?

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

Several former EA developers are working on The Run: Got Next; a 3-on-3 basketball game that's being described as a spiritual successor to NBA Street. This week, we join the community in sharing our thoughts on IGN's early preview of the game, which suggests a direction that many basketball gamers who remember NBA Street fondly may not actually enjoy. To that end, we also discuss whether it sounds like the game is truly carrying on the legacy of the iconic series, especially after revisiting NBA Street Vol. 2 over Parsec. We also react to a New York Times article that called out the predatory practices in 2K Sports and EA Sports titles, an issue that we're certainly passionate about.

NLSC Podcast #540: NBA 2K25 Gameplay News & Hands-On With NBA Superstars

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

August tipped off with the first gameplay trailer for NBA 2K25, as well as a courtside report outlining the key improvements that we can expect to see. This week, we join the community in sharing our thoughts on what we saw in the trailer, as well as our reactions to the changes, additions, and promises that were described in the developer blog. To that end, we also note some familiar claims and talking points from previous preview seasons. We also discuss the new arcade-exclusive title NBA Superstars - a release heavily inspired by NBA Jam, and featuring the legendary Tim Kitzrow on commentary - and provide detailed hands-on impressions following a lengthy session with the game.

Re: NLSC Podcast #541: NBA 2K25 MyCAREER News, NBA Superstars, & Retro Pickups

NLSC Podcast #541: NBA 2K25 MyCAREER News, NBA Superstars, & Retro Pickups

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

The latest NBA 2K25 Courtside Report has delivered the details on MyCAREER and MyPLAYER in this year's game. While some of the news is definitely promising on paper, we still have our doubts. Indeed, the lengthy grind and pushy recurrent revenue mechanics remain an elephant in the room that far too many content creators and influencers don't want to acknowledge, and sometimes even actively downplay. Nevertheless, we join the community in reacting to the latest NBA 2K25 previews. We also asked the community what they'd pay for a home port of NBA Superstars, and recap some of the excellent retro pickups that a couple of our fellow gamers have recently scored.

NLSC Podcast #542: The Steph Era & Other NBA 2K25 News

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

As the NBA 2K25 preview season rolls on, this week we're reacting to reveal of the Steph Era, some of the other additions to MyNBA, the return of MyGM, and some enhancements to The W. We also read out some reactions from the community, from their thoughts on the new era to which one they're planning on playing. Suffice it to say, opinions on the Steph Era are divided - as we discuss, there are issues with the starting point if nothing else - but we're generally in favour of the idea. To that end, it inspired a session of NBA 2K17 where we took on LeBron's Cavaliers with Steph's Warriors. We recap that session as well as a game of NBA ShootOut 2004, and also touch on some more NBA roster trivia.
