76ers Outlast Timberwolves in Overtime, 119-114







MINNEAPOLIS, MN -- In the first rematch between last year's Finalists back in January, the defending champion Philadelphia 76ers embarrassed the Minnesota Timberwolves 146-91. Entering their second clash of the season on March 9th, the Timberwolves - who were handily swept by the 76ers in last year's Finals following an underdog run - had a point to prove.

Although they weren't victorious, the Timberwolves competed with the 76ers from start to finish, almost putting an end to their historic winning streak before falling 119-114 in overtime. They're the only team that has succeeded in taking the three-time defending champions to an extra period this season, and were up by four in overtime before Andrew Begley led a furious rally to take control with two minutes left.

"They made us sweat," said A-Train, who scored 12 of his team-high 37 points in overtime. "I think they've heard what people said after last year and after we beat them earlier this year, and they're feeling disrespected. They wanted to make a statement, they brought it from the start and made us earn the win."

Asked if the Timberwolves had also earned the 76ers' respect, A-Train replied "They already had that. We wouldn't be 61-0 if we didn't respect our opponents. That's how you get cocky and lose, because there's too much talent in the league. We play hard every night because we respect everyone, and try to bring our A Game, always."

In addition to his 37 points, A-Train had 10 rebounds and 16 assists. Terry Hanson added 28 points to go along six rebounds and four assists, while Tony Wroten had 20 points in the win. Chase Budinger led Minnesota with 24 points and made a couple of cluch buckets in the final minute of regulation, while Kevin Love had 19 points, 12 rebounds, and six assists. Ricky Rubio had 14 points and matched A-Train's 16 assists, also tallying four steals which included forcing a key turnover on A-Train in the waning seconds of the fourth quarter.

The 76ers led 33-32 after the first quarter, and appeared to have the game in hand by the half. A spirited defensive effort and a bevy of three-pointers allowed Minnesota to close the gap in the third, with the lead being traded back and forth. They forced A-Train into an off-balance layup that missed as time expired and scored the first four points of overtime, but ran out of steam as the 76ers' superstar point guard heated up for a final push.

"There's a reason he's a three-time MVP", Kevin Love said after the game. "It's still a tough loss, we feel we could've and should've won that one. I'm still proud of our effort." With the loss, the Timberwolves are now 36-27, good for fifth in the West.

Philadelphia will be without starting forward Thaddeus Young for at least a few games, after he suffered a concussion following a hard collision in the fourth quarter. Rookie Scott Chandler reportedly also suffered a strained hamstring, but will still be available. Carmelo Anthony is still expected to return next month, while Michael Carter-Williams is out for the year with a torn MCL.

PHILADELPHIA, PA -- 76ers forward Thaddeus Young is expected to miss 2-4 weeks of action after sustaining a concussion during the team's 119-114 overtime victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves last night. The injury occurred following a collision in the fourth quarter. Trevor Booker is expected to start in Young's place until he returns.

Young was drafted 12th overall by Philadelphia in 2007, and has been a key contributor as a starter during their threepeat. In ten seasons for the 76ers, he's played in 721 games, posting averages of 11.4 ppg and 5.2 rpg.

Melo unsettled in Philadelphia?

PHILADELPHIA, PA -- The 76ers have been dominant all season, are gearing up for another championship run, and expect to have Carmelo Anthony back in the lineup within the next month. However, all may not be well in Philly.

A source close to Melo has described him as "unsettled", and questioning his future with the team. It isn't the first time we've heard rumblings about Melo's morale being low. There have been whispers for months that he's been feeling restless and disheartened while being sidelined with a torn MCL suffered in last year's Eastern Conference Finals.

While the team's success without him has surely been discouraging for the nine-time All-Star, his teammates have frequently and publicly supported him. Team captain and reigning MVP Andrew Begley has repeatedly stated how much they want Melo back, and how they're looking forward to his return to the lineup. Terry Hanson has openly credited Melo for helping him with his game, and praised him as a great teammate. If Melo is thinking about leaving, it won't be because his teammates failed to support him.

As it stands, he has one year remaining on the four-year deal he signed in 2014. Anthony is expected to be in uniform for the 76ers by the end of the regular season and will undoubtedly be a starter for them in the Playoffs, but if he remains disgruntled, he could well push for a trade next year. Hanson's emergence as one of the league's top scorers may have pushed Melo further down in the pecking order. Should he want to secure another big contract, he may opt for a bigger role over more rings.

Between Melo's discontent and Begley's impending free agency, the 76ers will be at a crossroads this offseason. Hanson is a rising star, but he's unproven without a playmaker averaging 16 assists per game by his side, getting him the ball all year long. Melo could be on the way out, and there's talk that A-Train is keeping his options open. Philadelphia will be contending for their fourth straight title, but it might be their last for a while.

Of course, even if that turns out to be the case, it will have been a tremendous four-year run that rivals the great dynasties in NBA history. It's also not set in stone that we've seen the end of the 76ers' success. They recently picked up their team option on Hanson's rookie deal, meaning he'll be under contract for two more years. That may have bought them some extra time with A-Train, who could re-sign on a shorter deal and then re-evaluate his options when he and Hanson are both free agents in 2019.

It just remains to be seen if Melo will be with them beyond next year, or if he'll be gone even sooner. Once he's back in the lineup and contributing to Philly's success, his morale may significantly improve. Nevertheless, it's a potentially combustible situation that's worth keeping an eye on, even as the 76ers continue to steamroll their way through the league.



LeBron leaving Lakerland?

LOS ANGELES, CA -- The ambitious pairing of two generational talents may soon be coming to an end in Los Angeles. LeBron James hasn't committed to opting into the fourth and final year of the deal he signed with the Lakers back in 2014.

When LeBron joined forces with Kobe Bryant, there were great expectations, even with the latter entering the final years of his career. Suffice to say that it hasn't panned out in Tinseltown, as LeBron missed most of the 2015 season with a knee injury. The Lakers then suffered a spectacular collapse in last year's Western Conference Finals, and are currently battling for the eighth seed this year.

Even if James returns to the Lakers, we may have seen the last of Kobe in purple and gold. Bryant is currently sidelined with a broken jaw, and if the Lakers don't qualify for the Playoffs, he may not play again this year. Kobe hasn't announced any concrete plans about his future, but may return for a 22nd season in order to chase Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's all-time scoring record.

It seems unthinkable that Kobe would seek to do that for any team but the Lakers, but with so much uncertainty surrounding the team and its immediate future, perhaps we shouldn't rule that out. We've already seen Dirk Nowitzki, once seemingly a Dallas Mavericks lifer, join the Brooklyn Nets. LeBron is now playing for his third team. Kobe is old school, but these are changing times in the NBA.

Will Kobe stay for one more year while LeBron moves on? Will LeBron stay while Kobe takes his talents elsewhere, or rides off into the sunset? Will the Lakers end up losing both of them? In Lakerland, even when the team is losing, they have an uncanny knack for being interesting and grabbing headlines!

Should they make the Playoffs and Kobe returns to action, we can't dismiss the idea of an underdog run. LeBron has been putting up numbers and willing the team into contention for the eighth seed, which they've briefly held at times in March. After last year's embarrassing elimination at the hands of the Minnesota Timberwolves, it would be poetic if they were dark horse Finalists this season.

That may be expecting too much, but in any event, the Lakers will likely still be in contention for some top free agents this offseason. That includes star point guards Derrick Rose and Russell Westbrook. Both players were unable to reach agreements to extend their current contracts, and have expressed interest in testing free agent waters. With rumours that the Philadelphia 76ers could potentially lose Andrew Begley, Carmelo Anthony, or both in the near future, this offseason could see a major reshuffling of talent around the league.

The Playoffs loom and that's what's on everyone's mind right now, but the offseason that will follow it may determine the course of many teams for years to come. As was the case in 2010 and 2014, LeBron is the name that many people will likely be paying the most attention to come July.

Ellis, Pistons End 76ers' Historic Streak







DETROIT, MI -- The last time the defending champion Philadelphia 76ers lost was in April 2016. That defeat came at the hands of Jackson Ellis and the Detroit Pistons, who for the second year in a row ended an historic winning streak by the 76ers.

Ellis scored 28 points, handed out a season high 18 assists, and blocked Andrew Begley's potential game-tying layup late in the fourth quarter, securing a 116-115 victory for the Pistons and putting a stop to the 76ers' winning streak at 69. All-Star Josh Smith had 24 points, while Kentavious Caldwell-Pope contributed 23 and made two clutch three-pointers in the fourth quarter.

"It stings," commented A-Train, who had 27 points, 11 rebounds, and 11 assists in the loss, but missed three crucial shots in crunch time. "Jack got us last year too, so I'm not going to hear the end of this for a while." A friendly wager between the two stars resulted in A-Train posting a gushing message about Ellis on social media in the wake of the defeat, crediting his rival for teaching him how to be an effective scorer.

Terry Hanson had a game high 34 points for the 76ers, but struggled with his shot, shooting just 15-of-35 from the field and 3-of-11 from downtown. It was an uncharacteristically flat performance for Philadelphia in the fourth quarter, as they squandered a lead and found themselves in a dogfight, allowing the Pistons to finally tie the game and then pull ahead in the waning minutes.

"We're not going to act like the sky is falling," 76ers coach Johnny Davis remarked in his post-game press conference. "We're 69-1. This is the first time we've lost in almost a full year. We're going to study the tapes for sure, same as always, but before you talk trash, remember we just won 69 games in a row. A loss to a one of the top teams in the league doesn't make us a laughing stock."

For his part, Ellis took the opportunity to brag. "Coach can say what he likes. We beat them." he boasted after the game. "Outscored A-Train like I said I would, dished out more assists, sent back two of his shots. They're vulnerable. This is going to be our year!" Philadelphia had won their previous two games against Detroit this season by margins of 135-104 and 125-91.

The Pistons currently hold the third-best record in the NBA at 46-26, 1.5 games behind the second-placed Chicago Bulls, and 1.5 games ahead of the Charlotte Bobcats. It seems likely that the Bulls and Pistons will renew their rivalry for the chance to advance to the Eastern Conference Finals, where a clash with the 76ers appears inevitable. The 76ers have defeated the Bulls in the Conference Finals in each of the past two seasons, but could be facing a new challenger this year.

"It's our time," Ellis boldly reiterated. "76ers, Bulls, it doesn't matter. The way I see it, it's our title to lose."

Carmelo Anthony Set to Return Against Raptors



PHILADELPHIA, PA -- It's been a long time coming, but Carmelo Anthony will be in action for the Philadelphia 76ers against the Toronto Raptors, after missing the first 77 games of the 2017 season.

Melo hasn't played a minute since Game 1 of the 76ers' clash with the Chicago Bulls in the 2016 Eastern Conference Finals. He missed sixed games late in the regular season after suffering a hyperextended knee, an injury he reaggravated during the Playoffs before ultimately suffering a torn MCL.

"We're happy to have him back," said team captain and reigning Finals MVP Andrew Begley. "We've been looking forward to this all year. We all missed playing with Melo. We came into this season with a mission, to make it four titles in a row, and we need him to do that. We need him to be a part of that, we want him to be out there with us to achieve that goal, and I'm glad he's finally been cleared."

A-Train's effusive welcoming of Anthony back to the lineup comes in the wake of rumours that the multi-time All-Star forward has been frustrated and worried about his role following the emergence of Terry Hanson, and the incredible winning streak the team had despite his absence. "It's been tough," Melo admitted. "But I'm proud of our team, and I'm ready to play."

Melo is expected to start against the Raptors, though he'll likely play limited minutes as the 76ers ease him back into the lineup, and he tests his surgically-repaired knee. Despite the rumours, Melo appeared upbeat and unconcerned about his role when talking to reporters after practice. "I'm ready to go," he reiterated. "Everything will sort itself out once I'm back on the court."

76ers Blow Out Raptors in Melo's Return







PHILADELPHIA, PA -- The Philadelphia 76ers have enjoyed several blowout victories this season, but this one was a little different.

Carmelo Anthony returned to action, making his 2017 season debut after missing the first 77 games of the season following his MCL tear in the 2016 Eastern Conference Finals. Slotting right back into the starting lineup, Melo played 30 minutes in the 76ers' 130-95 victory over the Toronto Raptors.

The Philadelphia crowd gave Melo an enthusiastic reception when he was announced along with the rest of the starters, and the team drew up their first possession to get him the ball for his bread and butter, a midrange jumper. Melo missed his first shot before knocking down his second, going on to score 23 points on 10-for-16 shooting. When asked if missing his first shot affected his confidence, Melo simply grinned, shook his head, and replied "Nah." Asked about his knee, he answered "Completely fine. I felt great out there."

Melo certainly looked like his old self when he intercepted a pass from Amir Johnson late in the second quarter, and effortlessly ran the ball up court to knock down a jumper on the break. Although he didn't dunk in his first game back, Melo did attack the rim and finished strong with a few layups, showing confidence in his surgically-repaired knee.

While Melo's knee gave him no grief, the Raptors' Kyle Lowry wasn't so lucky. After an awkward landing seven minutes into the game, Lowry had to be helped off the court by his teammates. He was later diagnosed with a sprained knee, and is expected to be out at least 2-4 weeks. With the Raptors sitting a game behind the Miami Heat and Atlanta Hawks in the race for the eighth seed however, the injury may have effectively ended Lowry's 2017 campaign. Rudy Gay led the team with 25 points in the loss.

Any questions about Anthony's ability to fit back into a lineup that has produced a stellar season despite his absence appear to have been quickly answered, as Melo, Terry Hanson, and reigning MVP Andrew Begley were in sync. The 76ers' Big Three shared the ball, with A-Train scoring 32 points and Hanson adding 30 of his own to go along with Melo's 23, on a combined 36-for-53 from the field. A-Train also had 21 rebounds and 16 assists, tallying a triple-double before halftime.

"We've been on fire all year, but Melo coming back makes us that much hotter," A-Train said after the game. "It was so much fun having him and Terry together on the wings again." When asked if he was surprised at their chemistry after Anthony's lengthy absence, A-Train replied "Not at all. We're talking about a guy who's bound for Springfield some day, still in his prime, who sacrificed when he came here in 2014 so we could win championships together. We knew we could pick up where we left off."

As for the trio sticking together for the foreseeable future, it appears that it's definitely on the table. "We have a great thing going here," A-Train said. "I think everyone's keeping their options open and you never know what opportunities will come along, but there are a lot of good reasons to keep this team together. We're looking to add another good reason come June."

Philadelphia will play host to Melo's former team, the New York Knicks, in two nights' time.

2017 NBA Playoffs Preview



EAST

Philadelphia 76ers (1) vs. Toronto Raptors (8)

Dominant. There's no other way to describe the Philadelphia 76ers' season, as the defending champions went 81-1. Four-time MVP A-Train led the league in all five major categories for the third consecutive year, averaging a triple-double as he led the 76ers to victory night in and night out. It's a daunting task for the eighth-seeded Toronto Raptors, though they won four straight to end the season and secure a Playoff berth. Still, a sweep for the 76ers seems likely.

Prediction: 76ers in 4

Charlotte Bobcats (4) vs. Boston Celtics (5)

Once again, the Bobcats qualified for the Playoffs as the fourth seed. Rajon Rondo will be facing his former team in this first round series, with the Boston Celtics now led by rising star Mark Everett and Brandon Jennings. The Celtics have more momentum entering the postseason, winning seven of their last ten games. The Bobcats' homecourt advantage could be the difference however, with the Celtics amassing a losing record on the road this season.

Prediction: Bobcats in 6

Chicago Bulls (3) vs. Milwaukee Bucks (6)

Unfortunately for the Bulls, their recent emergence as a perennial contender in the East has coincided with the Philadelphia 76ers' dominance. They've lost to the 76ers in the Eastern Conference Finals the last two years running, and are no doubt hoping that third time's the charm. They have a ways to go before that potential rematch, but they'll likely make quick work of the Milwaukee Bucks, with Derrick Rose and Jimmy Butler battling with Tracy Brock and Pat Clemons for backcourt supremacy.

Prediction: Bulls in 5

Detroit Pistons (2) vs. Cleveland Cavaliers (7)

Jackson Ellis and the Detroit Pistons own the distinction of being the only team to defeat the Philadelphia 76ers this year, once again ending a lengthy winning streak for the champs after being the final team to defeat them last season as well. Ellis has been battling knee problems, but is reportedly healthy. That's bad news for an underdog Cleveland Cavaliers team, though it should be quite a showdown between Ellis and Kyrie Irving. Nevertheless, Detroit should advance and likely clash with the Bulls to see who will have a chance to dethrone the 76ers in the Conference Finals.

Prediction: Pistons in 5

WEST

Oklahoma City Thunder (1) vs. Los Angeles Lakers (8)

A spirited run led by LeBron James saw the Lakers edge out the Denver Nuggets for the eighth seed in the West. Kobe Bryant returned for Playoff-clinching regular season finale, and might have enough left in the tank to help LeBron take a game or two from the Thunder. However, the younger duo of Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook will likely ride their homecourt advantage to a gentleman's sweep. Of course, last year's run by the Minnesota Timberwolves proved that anything can happen come the Playoffs...

Prediction: Thunder in 5

New Orleans Pelicans (4) vs. Minnesota Timberwolves (5)

Speaking of last year's unlikely NBA Finalists, the Timberwolves are the fifth seed in the West this season. They've overachieved despite losing Derrick Williams early on with a knee injury, and if last year is anything to go by, they shouldn't be counted out. Still, a healthy Pelicans team will be no pushover for the reigning Western Conference Champions, and their balanced attack led by Tyreke Evans, Anthony Davis, and Jrue Holiday may be too much for Minnesota to overcome.

Prediction: Pelicans in 6

Los Angeles Clippers (3) vs. Utah Jazz (6)

The Clippers are fielding a talented team these days. Perennial All-Star Chris Paul is joined in the backcourt by Oleksandr Popov, this year's Most Improved Player, while rookie standout Cam O'Connor has formed an exciting frontcourt with Blake Griffin. As one of only six teams to win 50+ games this season, Lob City has lofty expectations. The Jazz haven't been a strong defensive team outside of Derrick Favors however, and despite their underdog grit, aren't quite on the Clippers' level. Still, Chris Paul's toe injury will limit his minutes through the first round, giving the series the potential to go the distance.

Prediction: Clippers in 7

Portland Trail Blazers (2) vs. Houston Rockets (7)

Following two first round exits at the hands of lower seeds, the Portland Trail Blazers are determined to break their opening round curse. They lost the top seed to Oklahoma City by virtue of a tiebreaker, but in doing so, avoided the Los Angeles Lakers. They'll instead face a Houston Rockets team that will be without James Harden, who is likely out for the Playoffs. It's a great opportunity for the Blazers to have their best run since 2014; if they can't capitalise, one wonders if it's time to make some sweeping changes in Portland. For now though, it appears to be their series to lose.

76ers Rip Raptors in Game 1, But Lose Hanson

PHILADELPHIA, PA -- The defending champion Philadelphia 76ers had little trouble dispatching the Toronto Raptors in Game 1 of their first round series, but suffered a tough break when they lost Terry Hanson to injury.

Hanson, who averaged 30.3 ppg during the regular season, suffered a high ankle sprain just minutes into the series opener after scoring five quick points. He didn't return, and is currently expected to be out 6-8 weeks. That prognosis potentially rules him out for the entire 2017 Playoffs, though with the 76ers poised to make a run at their fourth straight title, there's a chance he'll be available by the NBA Finals in June.

Philadelphia were nevertheless able to dominate the Raptors from start to finish for a 139-87 victory. Andrew Begley tallied a quadruple-double with 37 points, 13 rebounds, 16 assists, and 12 steals, also adding seven blocks. Carmelo Anthony, who recently returned from last year's season-ending knee injury, had 29 points, two rebounds, five assists, and two steals.

Rudy Gay led the Raptors with 23 points, while Ramon Session contributed 16 points and six assists, but had a game high ten turnovers. Darin McKinney was the only other Raptor to score in double digits with 12 points.

Tony Wroten, who started 33 games following Michael Carter-Williams' season-ending knee injury back in January, is expected to return to the starting lineup in Hanson's place.

2017 NBA Playoffs First Round Recap



EAST

Philadelphia 76ers (1) defeat Toronto Raptors (8) 4-0

Unsurprisingly, the defending champions continued their dominance with a sweep of the eighth-seeded Raptors. The biggest news coming out of the series is Terry Hanson's ankle injury, which may have ruled him out for the remainder of the 2017 postseason. Philadelphia is still looking near-unbeatable with a returning Carmelo Anthony stepping in to be the second scorer behind Andrew Begley, but it will likely get tougher from here without the sophomore sensation rounding out their Big Three.

Charlotte Bobcats (4) defeat Boston Celtics (5) 4-2

As predicted, the Charlotte Bobcats dispensed the Boston Celtics in six games, despite impressive performances by Brandon Jennings (20.3 ppg, 7 apg) and Mark Everett (19.5 ppg, 8.7 rpg, 3.5 apg). Jordan Crawford led the way for the Bobcats with 24.7 ppg, while veteran Rajon Rondo conducted the offense with nine assists per game. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist will miss time with a broken finger however, so Charlotte will be short-handed as they face the 76ers for the third year in a row, and for the second consecutive time in the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals.

Milwaukee Bucks (6) defeat Chicago Bulls (3) 4-3

The good news? Derrick Rose didn't suffer another knee injury, as he infamously did against the Philadelphia 76ers five years ago. The bad news? He missed the final four games of the series with a broken jaw, and without him, the Chicago Bulls fell to the rival Milwaukee Bucks in a series that was extremely competitive outside of Game 6. Tracy Brock and Pat Clemons averaged 18 points and five assists apiece, getting the job done against the Bulls' depleted backcourt. Chicago will now prepare for an offseason in which Rose will be testing free agent waters, though his injury may cause him to seek the safety of a big payday in his hometown.

Detroit Pistons (2) defeat Cleveland Cavaliers (7) 4-0

Jackson Ellis and the Detroit Pistons completed the second of two sweeps in the East, defeating the Cleveland Cavaliers to advance to a second round clash with the Milwaukee Bucks. Ellis has been very vocal in declaring his team's chances of winning it all this year, especially after ending the 76ers' winning streak during the regular season. No doubt that will be added motivation for the Pistons' opponents moving forward, though Ellis is playing at a high level right now, posting averages of 20.2 ppg and 9.8 apg through the first round. With the Bulls eliminated, the Pistons are the clear favourites to potentially take down the defending champion 76ers.

WEST

Oklahoma City Thunder (1) defeat Los Angeles Lakers (8) 4-0

The Los Angeles Lakers gave it their all during the final weeks of the season, resulting in them edging out the Denver Nuggets for the eighth seed. They were outmatched by the Oklahoma City Thunder for most of the series however, losing Game 1 95-60, and Game 4 87-67. LeBron, Kobe, and the Lakers put up a respectable fight in Games 2 and 3, but the duo of Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook were just too much to overcome. Both LeBron and Kobe have a year left on their contracts, so it'll be interesting to see how the team re-tools for next season. In the meantime however, the Thunder are looking very strong.

New Orleans Pelicans (4) defeat Minnesota Timberwolves (5) 4-0

There won't be an underdog run by the Minnesota Timberwolves this year, as the New Orleans Pelicans made quick work of them despite Kevin Love averaging 27.3 ppg and 9.5 rpg. Ricky Rubio's struggles from the field didn't help though, as he averaged just eight points on 32% shooting (22% from downtown), but did contribute with 12 assists and 4.5 steals per game. New Orleans had a balanced attack led by Jrue Holiday's 21 ppg, with five Pelicans averaging double digits in the series. They'll need to keep sharing the ball and putting up points if they want to overcome the Thunder in the second round.

Los Angeles Clippers (3) defeat Utah Jazz (6) 4-2

Although it didn't go the distance as many predicted it would, the Clippers and Jazz had a competitive series with Los Angeles prevailing after six games. After playing sparingly through the first four games due to a nagging toe injury, Chris Paul returned to the starting lineup in Games 5 and 6 and was in fine form, racking up points and assists. Lob City may be on a collision course with Oklahoma City in the Western Conference Finals.

Houston Rockets (7) defeat Portland Trail Blazers (2) 4-2

For the third consecutive year, the Portland Trail Blazers were bounced in the first round by a lower seed, making them only one of two teams to be upset this year. Whereas the Bulls at least have the excuse of Derrick Rose's injury, the Blazers simply underwhelmed once again, falling in a 3-1 hole despite the Houston Rockets being without James Harden. Portland salvaged some dignity with a win in Game 5, but were promptly sent home in Game 6. Like the early 2000s Blazers, this squad is solidifying its reputation as a great regular season team that chokes come Playoff time. The Rockets' run will likely come to an end courtesy of the Clippers, but they were impressive in outplaying the Blazers, especially with Harden sidelined.

2017 NBA Playoffs Second Round Recap



EAST

Philadelphia 76ers (1) defeat Charlotte Bobcats (4) 4-0

For the third straight year, the Philadelphia 76ers swept the Charlotte Bobcats out of the Playoffs. It wasn't a competitive series until Game 4, when an unusually quiet game for A-Train saw the 76ers escape with a 97-90 victory. Other than that however, Philadelphia crushed Charlotte on route to their fourth consecutive Eastern Conference Finals appearance. They'll now face the team that ended their 69-game winning streak, preventing them from completing the first undefeated season in league history.

Detroit Pistons (2) defeat Milwaukee Bucks (6) (7) 4-3

It probably won't curb Jackson Ellis' brashness, but the Pistons were very close to bowing out in the second round. The Milwaukee Bucks won Games 3, 4, and 5 to take a 3-2 series lead, but couldn't finish off Detroit despite having two chances to do so. The long-awaited clash with the Philadelphia 76ers now awaits. Philly are still the favourites, but the Pistons could easily put another blemish on their record, especially with Terry Hanson still sidelined with a high ankle sprain.

WEST

New Orleans Pelicans (4) defeat Oklahoma City Thunder (1) 4-1

After defeating the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round, the New Orleans Pelicans may have inherited their mantle as this year's Cinderella team. They shocked everyone with a 4-1 defeat of the top-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder. It's certainly not the result that Kevin Durant was hoping for when he spurned offers from other teams to re-sign this past offseason. Russell Westbrook's impending free agency only adds to the murkiness moving forward in OKC.

Los Angeles Clippers (3) defeat Houston Rockets (7) 4-3

The Houston Rockets have played spectacularly in this postseason, handing the Portland Trail Blazers another upset loss in the first round, and taking the third-seeded Los Angeles Clippers to seven games. In the end though, Lob City were just too much to handle, as they comfortably cruised to a 121-100 victory in Game 7. The Clippers are poised to make their first NBA Finals, but with the way the Pelicans have been playing, that's far from guaranteed.

2017 Eastern Conference Finals Preview: A Rivalry Renewed

The rivalry between Andrew Begley and Jackson Ellis began long before the NBA

Before 2014, the Philadelphia 76ers and Detroit Pistons had only met four times in the NBA Playoffs, including an NBA Finals showdown in 1955 when the 76ers were still the Syracuse Nationals. As such, the teams have never developed much of a rivalry, even when Larry Brown infamously departed Philadelphia to coach Detroit in 2003.

However, with two meetings in the past four years, a long history between their star players, and a couple of streak-ending victories, we could be seeing the beginning of a rivalry similar to the one the 76ers cultivated with the Boston Celtics, and the one that the Detroit Pistons had with the Chicago Bulls.

In the 2017 Eastern Conference Finals, three-time champion and four-time league MVP Andrew Begley will renew his rivalry with Jackson Ellis, which began long before the two players made it to the NBA. Their respective performances in the 2013 Rookie Showcase gave fans a glimpse of what was to come, and also drew lines in the sand as far as who to cheer for. Since then, the two have often bantered before games, setting friendly (or perhaps, not-so-friendly) wagers, and turning in great performances against one another.

Of course, in many respects, the rivalry has been one-sided. A-Train's 76ers have won most of the matchups, and A-Train himself has already earned a place in the Hall of Fame some day, averaging triple-doubles, leading the league in every major category three years in a row, shattering long-standing marks for assist numbers, and of course, taking home plenty of trophies. The numbers and the hardware don't lie.

And yet, that doesn't deter the ever-cocky and confident Ellis. Jack's Pistons took a game from the 76ers in the 2014 Playoffs, one of only two postseason losses that the 76ers endured on route to the title. Last year, they snapped the 76ers then-record 45-game winning streak. They repeated the feat this season, ending Philly's winning streak at 69 and ensuring they wouldn't become the first team to achieve an undefeated regular season. In that game, Ellis outplayed A-Train in the fourth quarter, even blocking a potential game-tying layup.

After the game, Ellis proclaimed that the championship was the Pistons' to lose. That didn't sit well with the three-time defending champions, or their star point guard. "Yeah, it felt disrespectful," A-Train has admitted, on the eve of the Eastern Conference Finals tipping off. "Confidence is one thing, but we respect our opponents, and we believe we've earned the respect of the league as well. That's just Jack, though. He likes to stir the pot." Asked if it's added motivation heading into the Conference Finals, A-Train nodded. "Absolutely. No doubt."

The loss of Terry Hanson, second in the league in scoring to A-Train during the regular season, is a concern for the team as they prepare to face Detroit. Hanson suffered a high ankle sprain just minutes into the 76ers' Playoff opener against the Raptors, and is questionable to return this postseason. Carmelo Anthony is back in action and averaging 27.6 ppg during the Playoffs, but Philadelphia will need all hands on deck to hold off a determined and confident Detroit team.

"It's like I said, it's our title to lose at this point. We have their number." Ellis boasted to reporters yesterday. "A-Train's a hell of a player, he's done some awesome things since we came into the league together. But this is my year. My time. He's a great player, but I ain't scared of him. We ain't scared of them. You'll see."

Indeed, we will see when the series tips off tomorrow in Philadelphia. The 76ers will be seeking revenge; the Pistons, validation. With both teams having so much to prove, and there being such a long rivalry between their All-Star point guards, there's a chance that it could be a Conference Finals series for the ages.

Beyond the results of this series, the future holds some interesting questions for these two rivals. A-Train's impending free agency has been a talking point all season long, especially with the 76ers signing fellow Class of 2013 alumni Nerlens Noel and Michael Carter-Williams to extensions. Interestingly, Ellis has expressed an interest in playing with his long-time rival, though A-Train appears markedly less keen. There's speculation that he'll end up in Chicago if Derrick Rose moves on from the Bulls, though it's also no secret that he loves playing with Terry Hanson.

Should A-Train go to the Bulls, it'll only add fuel to the fire of his rivalry with Ellis and the Pistons. With that being said, things are already heating up with the Pistons dealing the 76ers a couple of heartbreaking losses, and the teams now squaring off with a trip to the NBA Finals on the line. Whatever happens, we can be sure that A-Train and Jack will be prepared to put on a show, and leave it all on the line as they write another chapter in their ongoing saga.

Jackson Ellis' proclamation that the Pistons were the team to beat rather than the defending champion 76ers has aged like milk. It was a brash statement at the time, but Jack's doubling down on his boasting makes them bitter words to eat following Philadelphia's sweep of Detroit. The series opened with a 130-98 blowout, and although the final scores in Games 2 through 4 don't indicate how competitive they were throughout, the three-time champion 76ers proved that they remain the dominant force in the NBA today. Although Thaddeus Young sat out most of the series with a bruised heel, he's expected to return for the NBA Finals.

WEST

New Orleans Pelicans (4) defeat Los Angeles Clippers (3) 4-2

The run continues for this year's underdog New Orleans Pelicans team, as they won four straight after dropping the first two games of the Western Conference Finals to the Los Angeles Clippers. Of course, it helped that Chris Paul suffered a seperated shoulder towards the end of Game 2, ruling him out for the rest of the series. Like the Minnesota Timberwolves last year, the Pelicans now have the daunting task of trying to dethrone the Philadelphia 76ers. Few will be picking them to win a single game, let alone the series, but that won't deter New Orleans from giving it their all in their first ever NBA Finals appearance.

2017 NBA Finals Preview: 76ers vs Pelicans

A-Train and the 76ers humbled Jackson Ellis and the Pistons in the Eastern Conference Finals, setting up a showdown with the Pelicans

"It's not yours. It never was yours!"

That's what Andrew Begley had to say to his rival Jackson Ellis, as the Philadelphia 76ers completed a sweep of the Detroit Pistons in the Eastern Conference Finals. A-Train and the 76ers were clearly motivated by Jack's trash talking after the Pistons snapped their 69-game winning streak during the regular season, opening the series with a 130-98 victory. They then withstood a valiant performance by the Pistons over the next three games to advance to the NBA Finals for the fourth consecutive season. They now face the New Orleans Pelicans as they attempt to become the first team to win four NBA Championships in a row since the Boston Celtics way back in the 1960s.

"It was always going to be personal," A-Train said after Game 4. "We've been competing for years, but when Jack said the title was theirs to lose..." He held up three fingers before continuing "Three in a row. Threepeat. Two clean sweeps of the Playoffs. That's our crown, and everyone else is trying to take it from us. We've earned that."

If A-Train's words are less diplomatic than we're accustomed to hearing, it's perhaps because this has been a deceptively difficult year for the team. Sure, they dominated the regular season, going 81-1. They've yet to lose in the 2017 Playoffs, and A-Train has been spectacular all year long. However, the efforts to chase history have unquestionably taken their toll on the young superstar. He once again led the league in every major statistical category, but looked weary at times during the season.

"Playing flat out. That's all I know," he admitted on the eve of the NBA Finals. "I'm still learning to pace myself better." A-Train certainly has more help these days, with the emergence of Terry Hanson and Carmelo Anthony healthy again following last year's devastating knee injury. However, Hanson suffered a bad ankle sprain in the first quarter of the 76ers' Playoff opener against the Toronto Raptors. The team hasn't been completely healthy at any point this season, and while they've dominated, A-Train has shouldered a great deal of the burden, even with Hanson averaging 30.3 ppg alongside him. It's questionable as to whether Hanson will be able to return during the Finals.

While the 76ers have marched to the NBA Finals, the New Orleans Pelicans have had a much tougher road. At various times this season, they held the best record in the West, though a 5-5 finish saw them end the 2017 campaign with a 45-37 record; slightly disappointing given their earlier brilliance, but still good for the fourth seed. They swept last year's Finalists, the Minnesota Timberwolves, in the first round. They then had to conquer the top-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder, which they did in five games. After dropping the first two games of the Western Conference Finals to the Los Angeles Clippers, they came storming back to win in six and advance to the NBA Finals for the first time in club history.

Of course, while their Cinderella run has impressed many, there are still whispers about how it probably should've ended in the Conference Finals. Perennial All-Star Chris Paul suffered a seperated shoulder late in the Clippers' Game 2 victory, which ruled him out for the rest of the series. If that doesn't happen, it's quite likely that we're looking at a 76ers-Clippers Finals. Still, Pelicans guard Jrue Holiday has no time for such "What Ifs".

"You can only play who shows up, and you've gotta get the job done," Holiday said in response to the whispers. "We've played hard all season, and now we're competing for a championship. You can't take that away from us. We're not worried about that talk. We've got a big challenge in front of us, and we're focusing on that."

Indeed, Holiday - who began his career with Philadelphia - isn't about to imitate Jackson Ellis' trash talk. "He's become the best player in the league," Holiday said of A-Train. "I truly believe that. They've been incredible these past four years. We know what we're up against. But if you want to win in this league, you can't be intimidated. They're the team to beat, and that's our goal. That's what we have to do, if we want to have what they have."

The Pelicans are better than their record suggests, though in their last meeting with the 76ers, Philadelphia won 144-93. Still, it seems neither team is taking the other lightly. "We can't afford to take our foot of the pedal," A-Train said. "Yeah, we went 81-1. We're undefeated in the Playoffs so far. But we've had some incredibly tough battles to be in this position. We've had to earn our wins. Those guys aren't just showing up to make an appearance. They've come to play, they've come to try to beat us. We're not about to underestimate anyone."

With young stars like A-Train, Anthony Davis, and Holiday, along with veterans such as Carmelo Anthony and Ben Gordon, it could prove to be a very entertaining and competitive series. There are also still looming questions about the 76ers' future, especially with A-Train's impending free agency. There appears to be a good chance that he'll re-sign with the 76ers, but sources suggest it isn't a lock. On top of that, Melo is reportedly still uneasy about his future with the team after sitting out most of what's been such a successful season to date. Even slotting back in as the number two option on the team in Hanson's absence apparently hasn't mollified him.

"We'll deal with the future come the offseason," A-Train said. "Right now, we're all focused on winning number four." While it may not be a reassuring guarantee that the team will remain together beyond this year, nothing seems to be a foregone conclusion. Another championship parade will certainly remove some of the sting if this is their last dance, though the Pelicans aren't keen on being a footnote in a fairy tale ending. "We didn't come this far to just smile and bow out gracefully," said third year guard Bob Lowry.

In addition to the 76ers being without Terry Hanson due to his high ankle sprain, the Pelicans' Tyreke Evans is also expected to miss the entire series due to knee problems. Evans was their leading scorer this season at 17.9 ppg, while also averaging 4.4 rpg and 5 apg. Michael Carter-Williams isn't expected to return to action for the 76ers until next season, after tearing his MCL 44 games into the 2017 season. Thaddeus Young will be available for the 76ers after missing the final three games of the Eastern Conference Finals due to a bruised heel. Game 1 tips off tomorrow night in Philadelphia.

76ers Sit One Win Away From Fourth Straight Championship


The 76ers are on the cusp of joining Russell's Celtics

NEW ORLEANS, LA -- If the Philadelphia 76ers have their way, tomorrow night's game will mark the end of the 2017 season, and crown them NBA Champions for the fourth year in a row.

The New Orleans Pelicans aren't about to make it easy for them, though. Despite missing Tyreke Evans, and Jrue Holiday being bothered by a sore wrist, the Pelicans have fearlessly battled the 76ers to the final buzzer. Games 1 and 2 were competitive affairs until the final minutes, and while Philadelphia raced out to a 30-point lead in Game 3, New Orleans stormed back to bring it within thirteen before the 76ers pulled away again for the 20-point victory.

Holiday in particular has been spectacular for New Orleans, doing his best to match Andrew Begley's scoring output in every game. A-Train meanwhile erupted for 53 points in the Game 1 victory, and has already secured a triple-double average in the 2017 Playoffs. If he can grab at least 10 rebounds in a Game 4 win while Anthony Davis snares nine or less, he'll also lead all players in the postseason in all five major statistical categories in both totals and average.

Carmelo Anthony and Bob Lowry have also been filling up the scoresheet for the 76ers and Pelicans respectively, though Lowry struggled with his shot in Game 2. Tony Wroten and Nerlens Noel have also been key contributors in the 76ers' three wins, as the team has collectively rallied to replace the scoring of Terry Hanson, who likely won't play again this season. Anthony Davis has been solid on the boards, but has struggled to score against Philadelphia's interior defense.

A fourth championship - which certainly seems inevitable at this point - will move Philadelphia past the Chicago Bulls for the third-most in NBA history.

A-Train's Decision Looms As 76ers Go Up 3-0

A-Train catches his breath in Game 1 of the 2017 NBA Finals

NEW ORLEANS, LA -- Although the wisest competitors will never assume an NBA Championship is in the bag until the fourth win of the NBA Finals is secured, it's difficult to imagine this Philadelphia 76ers team losing four in a row to blow a 3-0 lead.

Even if the NBA Finals doesn't end tomorrow, it probably won't return to The Big Easy for a Game 6. Before the series began, most pundits declared it to be the 76ers' to lose, and that's unquestionably the position they now officially find themselves in, just one win away from an historic fourth consecutive championship. They'll celebrate that enthusiastically in the City of Brotherly Love, but the question is: will they get an opportunity to compete for a fifth straight title?

The answer hinges on Andrew Begley. The man known as A-Train will be a free agent, a situation that has loomed over the team all season long despite their incredible performance. Now that they're in a position to officially end the 2017 season tomorrow, the situation that everyone has dismissed as a matter to worry about later - including A-Train himself - is suddenly a reality.

We're all speculating, and sources say that not only has A-Train not already decided, but he's not leaning in specific direction. There have been whispers of a few scenarios though, so let's break them down one more time before A-Train makes and announces his decision in free agency.

Scenario 1: Philadelphia 76ers

A-Train has plenty of reasons to stay in Philadelphia. He likes the team, and has grown close to a number of his teammates, chiefly Terry Hanson. He's creating a legacy for himself in Philadelphia, and the chance to lead a team to a fifth straight title is surely an appealing challenge. A-Train has spoken of his admiration for players who spent their entire careers with one team, or at least a bulk of them in the case of stars who briefly moved on in their final seasons. There's a great chance that he re-signs, if only for two years before re-evaluating the situation when Hanson is a free agent.

Likelihood: Very High

Scenario 2: Chicago Bulls

If A-Train doesn't re-sign with the Philadelphia 76ers, there's one team that most pundits expect he'll look to join: the Chicago Bulls. A-Train grew up a fan of the Bulls, with a great admiration for Michael Jordan. As such, it wouldn't be surprising if he had some inkling to wear the red and black of MJ's old team, and try to follow his act in the Windy City. With Derrick Rose also becoming a free agent, Chicago may be in need of a new star at point guard. Their first round exit this year may encourage them to move on from Rose rather than persuade him to stay, and A-Train is an obvious candidate.

Likelihood: High

Scenario 3: Oklahoma City Thunder

Here's a scenario that's been gaining traction. Like the Bulls, the Thunder may lose their star point guard this offseason, as Russell Westbrook will become a free agent. They too experienced a disappointing upset loss in the 2017 Playoffs, and may be looking to go in a different direction. With A-Train's love of assists, he might prefer playing alongside an elite scorer like Kevin Durant, which the Bulls don't have. This offseason could be the Great Reshuffling of Superstar Point Guards.

Likelihood: Moderate

Scenario 4: Los Angeles Lakers

After A-Train's rookie season, LeBron James was reportedly recruiting the rising star. The King was impressed by the player who swept his Heat in the 2014 Eastern Conference Finals, which led to him taking his talents to Hollywood. The pairing of LeBron and Kobe Bryant hasn't panned out as well as Lakers fans had hoped, but the addition of A-Train could quickly change that. The question is whether A-Train has interest in helping LeBron and Kobe with their legacies when he's already carving out an impressive one for himself, and the answer is probably not.

Likelihood: Low

Scenario 5: Detroit Pistons

Jackson Ellis is on record saying that he'd love to team up with his long-time rival, winning games together rather than competing. It already seemed like a long shot before this season, but after his trash talk following the Pistons' victory over the 76ers during the regular season - not to mention an emotionally-charged Eastern Conference Finals - there's surely no way that A-Train wants to help his hardwood nemesis win titles. Then again, stranger things have happened...

Likelihood: Very Low

A-Train Decides: I'm Staying in Philly



PHILADELPHIA, PA -- In the end, Andrew Begley's free agency resembled the offseasons of Tim Duncan in 2000 and Chris Webber in 2001 far more than LeBron James' infamous Decision in 2010. Of course, you won't hear many complaints from Philadelphia 76ers fans over such an anti-climactic result!

A-Train agreed to return to the Philadelphia 76ers on a two-year deal. While the shorter contract is intended to give both sides flexibility, A-Train and the 76ers both talked about long-term plans beyond the 2019 campaign. "In the end, this is where I belong," A-Train said. "I wanted to listen to other offers, and the team respected that. There was mutual trust there to allow me that freedom, and welcome me back when I made my decision. We've got something special going here, and I couldn't walk away from teammates and an organisation that mean so much to me."

Of course, the Chicago Bulls ultimately re-signing Derrick Rose no doubt played a large role in A-Train's decision to remain in Philadelphia. The Bulls appeared to be the only other team that the star point guard had any serious interest in playing for, and with Rose remaining in the Windy City, the choice to stay became even easier.

The decision has 76ers fans talking about the team establishing their place in NBA history as a dynasty. A-Train stopped short of agreeing with the label, but said "This is a team looking to make even more history, and I want to be a part of that. This is our Drive for Five. Every year is a marathon, but it doesn't get old winning rings. I want one for the thumb!"

In the end, Russell Westbrook was the All-Star point guard who moved on, as he signed with the Miami Heat. He won't be forming a dynamic duo with Dwyane Wade however, as Wade elected to leave the team that drafted him in 2003. He won't be going far though, as he's signed with the Orlando Magic. Isaiah Thomas, who spent the last three years with the Magic, has replaced Westbrook in Oklahoma City.

Other key offseason moves include Amar'e Stoudemire signing with the Utah Jazz, and the San Antonio Spurs' signing of James Harden and Tristan Thompson. Over the past couple of years, the Spurs have lost Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili to retirement, leaving Tony Parker as the last man standing from their fourth championship way back in 2007. The acquisition of Harden and Thompson should propel the Spurs back into the Playoff picture, as they form a strong core with the veteran Parker and promising young forward Kawhi Leonard.

Though the Philadelphia 76ers remain favourites to win it all once again, the 2018 season is set to be another thrilling campaign throughout the league.

Meta: About the return...

So, breaking from the in-universe story for a moment, I was all set to explore free agency, and definitely considering moving on from the Philadelphia 76ers. However, I automatically re-signed with the 76ers for two years at a rate of zero (!) offline VC. I'm not sure if it's a bug, or perhaps a side effect of it being an offline save, as I know there is supposed to be a free agency decision based on YouTube videos. It might also be that my decision has to coincide with Jackson Ellis' free agency, and this is how the game is setting things up for that scenario, given that Ellis had already signed an extension with Detroit.

It's a bit of a bummer, especially if being an offline save (or the result of a glitch) will prevent me from ever taking part in free agency. If I do decide to move on at some point, I may have to demand a trade to make it happen. On the bright side, that would unlock a Trophy! The downside is that it wouldn't really fit the story and character that I'm role-playing. Nevertheless, I'm still enjoying the game and making a story out of it, and taking things as they come.

Also, I did some more research into the free agency situation, and it seems that was happening when the servers were still online, so it has nothing to do with being an offline save. Possibly just the way it is/was. We'll see if I end up demanding a trade at some point.
