There are "live events" which have timers to them, PVP is "opt-in" by shooting someone back after they shoot you which enables "full damage" rather than "slap damage." I chose to just respawn without seeking revenge, and it was as if nothing happened, with all my gear and all, so the whole thing really was pretty pointless and annoying.
