New Thought on AI - Play Like a Gamer

Fri Oct 11, 2013 6:02 am

In addition to having the AI replicate what real players do on the court, have an AI Gamer, controlling one player on the AI team, that replicates what a gamer does in the game. The idea came to me when I was thinking of the old days of Quake and the Quake Bots. There were two types of Bots - in game, and client bots that would connect to a server just like a person connected.

Such a Gamer AI could learn from the player. It could mimic/replicate what the player does that's successful.

AI "Hey, look, the gamer threw that full court pass, let me try that."

AI "Hey, he keeps going into the paint, let me try that."

AI "Hey, he beat me five games in a row. Let me try kicking out to the three point shooters."

The reality is the game isn't a real NBA basketball game. It's not on the court. It's a video game. A player has the advantage over the AI, because the player knows it's not on the court. The player can look for the exploits, and he can think outside the box of what's coded. An AI player with the same attributes as a player holding a controller would be more of a long-term challenge.

VIP playback

press rebound when selecting teams, scroll down, and for the AI team choose your profile. If you can notice the game behaving different, then we can start a thread like we did the other year for people to share their profiles.

What it is supposed to do is replicate the user's tendencies in the game, for the AI. I don't know how much it overrides the default AI, but I am curious as to what you find with it.

what my profile would look like to affect the AI playstyle (aka, how I play the game)

That's kind of how Real AI worked in NBA Jam: On Fire Edition. I wouldn't mind seeing the concept adapted for a sim game.

I find it funny I was thinking the same thibg thing earlier. Really good idea.

I'm going to try this, but these tendencies aren't the same as adjusting to what is happening in the game. In addition, you'd play differently with one team compared to another. The profile is how you generally play. Loading Bob Smith's VIP profile for the Lakers, for example, wouldn't work if Bob Smith always played as the Heat, took a majority of shots with Lebron, and called plays that centered around Lebron.

I'm talking about an "AI" that would learn what the opposition does, learn what works against the opposition (you), adjusts to what you do, adjusts to the players it has on its team, adjust to the sliders (i.e. if you turn outside shooting to 0, thus making shooting harder, the CPU/AI would pound the ball inside.)

When I try to select the profile, there's a message "access to this feature requires a minimum of one game played." I played a game, saw it save the profile, but the same message appears when I try to select the profile.

Scientists in the field of artificial intelligence can't get that shite down, I doubt videogame programmers can do it.

I'd be interested if VIP playback decently works in 2K14 but I'm not counting on it. From my experience of fiddling with it in the past versions of the game a VIP playback with a run-n-gun or fast paced playing style (arcadey?) can give you some good gaming fun but it really sucks when the recorded VIP is that of a deliberate slow paced player since the cpu will tend to hold the ball and squeeze the hell out of the shot clock resulting in a lot of shot clock violations or take bad shots from the floor just to throw up the shot but usually it's more of the former.

There's also this (unconfirmed?) thing that the VIP tendencies are only from the last 2 or 5 games played by the user. So if the user was playing a fast paced style for the first 100 games but played with a deliberate style for his last 5 games then the VIP playback will have the deliberate style of getting shot clock violations.

One little "AI" trick the CPU could use at the end of games, or in tight situations, would be get the ball to the top scorer.

I haven't tried VIP playback in a couple of years. Last time I tried VIP playback it was completely broken.

Based on 2K13, you're not missing anything Pdub, it still is in a way.
What I mentioned in my previous post mostly applies on offense, on defense well....don't expect anything good. At all.
