Memory Leak?

Wed Oct 09, 2013 10:42 am

Anyone else having the game suddenly take up a lot of CPU? Bringing my computer to a damn standstill, task manager says it is using 99 of my CPU when it happens. Memory usage stays constant, it is just bottlenecking my processor. Not in the game itself, main menu or roster menus.

What are your system specs?

i7-3770K, 8gigs ram, 560ti

Odd, you shouldn't have any issues with your processor and you have plenty of ram. The one thing it could be is the 560 ti depending on how much GPU ram it has. Is it the 2gig version? I use to have that one and unfortunately the a lot of games are starting to outgrow it because of higher res textures and effects. I ended up investing in a 780. Best investment I made. Most games now want you to have a 600 series card at minimum for high settings. Not sure if thats the case with NBA 2k14 but maybe. Do you use the self shadows setup? That can eat a lot of ram as well.

My computer shutdown and restarted(basically blue screened) in the middle of a game when I discovered the issue with the roster update resetting the coach profiles. The error message was 0x0124, which is a general hardware failure/overclocking limit/overheating. So it was definitely pushing my hardware. I haven't had it happen since.

Davon6, this was on either the home screen or in the rosters menu with no players loaded. I did have the online data roster.iff read only'd while I was modding, so maybe the game was spazzing about trying to download the latest and being unable to?

No errors viewable for it in the event viewer unfortunately

Yeah, definitely have to be careful if you do any overclocking. But yeah, the games now all mostly suggest 600 series or above. And once you start modding and adding new stuff that really becomes taxing on older video cards. But also make sure that your BSOD wasn't just related to the game. You might want to run TDSS Killer to make sure you dont have a rootkit imbedded in your system. Those things are ultra annoying and can secretly cause BSOD by messing with system resources. Even with the 560 ti 2k14 shouldn't be working your system that hard to cause complete shutdown.

At worst with what you're describing the game should just crash out, not cause bluescreen. Thats very odd.

Re: Memory Leak?

it didn't blue screen, it didn't crash it, it just bottlenecked the CPU and made everything on my computer run like shit. barely able to move the mouse, couldn't even get task manager started without a long delay. The game was windowed, but again, I have been doing this for years.

Nothing we do here impacts performance since all we can do is replace textures and models with the same exact file sizes. It only gets hectic with ENBs, other filters, and SSAO which were not applicable to this.

Ah ok, gotcha. I misread about the system shutdown you mentioned. But still, strange unless you hit a bug that is indeed a mem leak of some sort. I've not encountered anything like that since I started playing. I will say this though, when I had my 560 ti, at the time I thought it was capable of running anything but I noticed just this past year when I still had that card that it was struggling to run a lot of the newer games. I encountered lots of crashes and frequent lag. So keep that in mind. If your card only has 1gig vram thats going to be part of the issue.

Don't know about memory leak since the memory is unchanged, but it definitely sounds like a runaway routine or something.

Does it do it while in the menu in game?

On the upside, maybe this will get us a patch! (Y) (Y) (Y) No, it won't.

Sounds like a high priority task taking resources. I have not had lag like that in a while, but the last time I did, my anti virus was doing a rootkit scan taking up resources and using the hard drive, causing lag and low performance.

It also reminds me of when users lost their internet and the game froze up for a while.

As for constantly checking for downloads and updates, if you did what I did with the roster, that is definitely a possibility. When using a monitor to try and find the file being used for the directors cut overlay, the game was constantly trying to update the roster, but it didn't cause a performance hit for me.

Meanwhile, Leftos is laughing maniacally for this is his punishment to us for not worshipping him as our rightful 2K GOD.

That's weird. I alt-tab out of the game all the time and have multiple browser windows open with no lag. And I only have a Q6600 with 4850 x2. Not that this will fix this problem necessarily, but do you maintain your computer by removing non-essential auto start up programs and services? Use HijackThis and Autoruns do disable stuff you don't need and your machine will generally run faster.

Just a reminder, it is me. Not a newbie to the computer business or anything like that. It was the game taking up all the CPU resources, it was seen within task manager when I finally got it open.

I will try to get it to happen again to see if it is reproducible.

Sir, did you ever use Advanced System Care's Smart Ram program which's cleaning up the Ram and cpu...:)

Yeah, Jon. Maybe you should download more ram.

I noticed while I was modding and had the game up in the background on the main screen and all of a sudden all the other programs came to a stand still almost. Never happened to me with 2k13. But once I closed 2k14 everything ran fast again... crazy

Re: Memory Leak?

did you have the online data folder read only'd to prevent the updated rosters from coming through?

Re: Memory Leak?

Sounds to me like a CPU throttling issue. Are you monitoring temperatures? If temps get too high, the CPU will throttle to keep from burning up. When it throttles, the CPU usage will skyrocket since it cannot put out enough power without the risk of frying.

Also, I'd run MemTest86 overnight and see what kind of results you get. You can download it at http://www.memtest86.com/. MemTest is the defacto standard for testing your memory.

it was odd - i was forcing adaptive aa and my computer would laaag after closing 2k14. switched it up to supersampling and now it's fine. are u using adaptice, jao?

Re: Memory Leak?

no

I think I should make mention again that this was a one time thing, has not reoccured, and not reproducible consistently.
