This is the 15th title for the storied Los Angeles Lakers franchise and their first since 2003 when the team was top-billed by the Kobe-Shaq tandem.
The Bobcats' Cinderella story didn't have a happy ending despite having home court advantage, as the more experienced and wiser Lakers team controlled the series. It was only in Game 4 that Charlotte came close to a win but
Kobe Bryant's three-pointer with 8 seconds left ultimately gave Los Angeles the championship.
Jason Richardson had a chance to extend the series for the Bobcats but his jumper missed as time expired.
"This championship is special," said Bryant, the Finals MVP. "After years of frustration, we are back at the top."
For Bryant this championship means a whole lot more than the first three. Probably because this is the first time he won it without the big shadow of his former teammate
Shaquille O'Neal.
"I don't have to hear that criticism, that idiotic criticism anymore,'' said Bryant. "It was annoying.''
For Lakers coach
Phil Jackson, this was title No. 10, moving him past legendary Celtics coach Red Auerbach for the most by a coach in league history.
"I'll smoke a cigar in honor of Red,'' Jackson said. "He was a great guy.''
For
Pau Gasol. For
Derek Fisher. For
Lamar Odom. For
Trevor Ariza.For
Mikki Moore and for
Andrew Bynum and the rest of the Lakers, this was a title to savor.
"It's a dream come true,'' Gasol said. "The completion of a goal.''
