2007-2008 Season Preview
Key Acquisitions: Ben Wallace, Wally Szczerbiak, Delonte West
The addition of several players to the Cavaliers definitely makes them one of the toughest teams on paper. But much to everyones disbelief, the team struggled in the preseason, winning only 1 out of 7 games.
Only half of the team are carry-overs from last season’s Conference Championship which means that playing together will definitely be a problem.
They lost two key guys from last season in Larry Hughes and Drew Gooden but they certainly got great players in exchange. Ben Wallace is a former defensive player of the year and will certainly help the Cavs defense. Wally Szczerbiak is a proven scorer that will definitely give them lift off-the-bench. Delonte West is used to running the offense and will help set-up plays for his teammates. Other players added that will certainly help the team are Joe Smith, Gerald Green and Devin Brown.
The Cavaliers better be ready once the season starts if they want to go back in the NBA Finals and bring the championship to Cleveland.
Other Teams’ Preview:
Key Acquisition: Mike Bibby
With the addition of Bibby, Atlanta now has a legit point guard who can score and distribute the ball. Al Horford is a nice looking rookie that can definitely help them in the paint. Josh Smith and Joe Johnson will have to co-exist with the new guys for them to get in the playoffs.
Key Acquisitions: Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen
The Big Three of KG, Ray-Ray and Paul certainly makes the Celtics a tough contender for the Larry O’Brien trophy. They have also added veterans Sam Cassell, James Posey and PJ Brown to help them in their title hunt. The only question for them is the performance of the other guys on the team.
Key Acquisitions: Jason Richardson, Earl Boykins
Getting Richardson gives Charlotte a legitimate scoring threat. Emeka Okafor and Gerald Wallace needs to add some more offensive moves in their arsenal to give the franchise their first crack in the playoffs.
Key Acquisitions: Drew Gooden, Larry Hughes
They lost some defensive presence with Big Ben’s departure but they got Gooden who is a much better low-post scorer than Wallace. Larry Hughes will give them scoring and perimeter defense. The Bulls has what it takes
to make a good run this season.
Key Acquisitions: Jason Kidd, Eddie Jones
Receiving Kidd for young point guard Devin Harris is quite a risk. Kidd isn’t a kid anymore and Harris definitely has tremendous potential. But the sure thing is that Jason will hit the open man anytime when he is on the floor, which means Dirk and company wont have a hard time scoring.
Key Acquisitions: Anthony Carter, Chucky Atkins
Denver added added veteran point guards in Chucky Atkins and Anthony Carter. The main issue for this teams success is their health. Kenyon Martin, Marcus Camby and Nene always gets hurt which sometimes leaves them thin with big men. AI and Melo will still be one of the leagues top scoring duos. This could be a good year for them.
Key Acquisition: Jarvis Hayes
Still one of the top teams in the league. Added some minor pieces with Jarvis Hayes and Juan Dixon. Their starting five was part of their championship run in 2004 which means chemistry is still intact in Motown. A sure contender from the East.
Key Acquisition: Chris Webber
Gambled when they signed aging forward Chris Webber. It is not known if he will fit the team’s run and gun style of play because he has become much more of a half-court offense guy. But what the Warriors will get from him is leadership and veteran smarts that would help them if they reach the playoffs.
Key Acquisitions: Steve Francis, Bobby Jackson
Once again, the key to the Rockets’ success will be the health of their two superstars Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady. Since being paired together this duo has somewhat underachieved because every season it seems that one of them goes down with an injury. They are such a tough team when both guys are playing together.
Key Acquisitions: none
Jermaine O’Neal remains to be the face of this franchise. The thing for him is to stay away from injuries because without him, the Pacers’ hope for reaching the playoffs will be long gone. Danny Granger will certainly be depended upon to carry some of the scoring load for the team.
Key Acquisition: Al Thornton
The Clippers have a well balanced line-up of young guys and veterans. Their team chemistry will be a vital part of their campaign this year. Elton Brand and Corey Maggette will have to lead this team in the very tough Western Conference. Rookie Al Thornton will definitely learn a lot from his star teammates.
Key Acquisition: Pau Gasol
After receiving a gift from the Memphis Grizzlies in the form of Spaniard Pau Gasol, the Lakers definitely got themselves a true post presence that will immediately fit the triangle offense. With arguably the best player in the NBA, Kobe Bryant and versatile Lamar Odom, it puts Los Angeles back in the title picture.
Key Acquisition: Mike Conley
After trading their franchise player for the ever inconsistent Kwame Brown and rookie Javaris Crittenton, the Grizzlies are probably going o be lottery bound. They will still be fun to watch with Rudy Gay, Mike Conley, etc.
Key Acquisition: Shawn Marion
Big Diesel Out. The Matrix in. With Shawn Marion, the style of play for the Heat immediately changes. From an inside-out game with Shaq, it now transforms them into a running and shooting team. We have to see how this partnership between The Flash and The Matrix evolves.
Key Acquisition: Yi Jianlian
Nothing much too say except that Milwaukee’s fanbase in China grew by a million after drafting rookie forward Yi Jianlian. Michael Redd will still be the main man for the ball club and will need help from veteran guys like Mo Williams and Desmond Mason.
Key Acquisition: Al Jefferson
The Timberwolves are in rebuilding mode after trading away their franchise player for some young up-and-coming stars. They are hoping that Al Jefferson develops into a superstar caliber player and that the other guys will grow up quickly. Definitely a lottery team this year.
Key Acquisition: Devin Harris, Stromile Swift
The post-Kidd era has began, and Devin Harris will now be tasked to run the show in New Jersey. Vince Carter and Richard Jefferson will still be running the wings which still makes the Nets fun to watch. They have a young front line that definitely needs to step-up.
Key Acquisition: Bonzi Wells
With a healthy Peja Stojakovic, The Hornets can make a run for the playoffs. CP3 is continuing to develop his game and they have some quality role players on their bench led by Bonzi Wells and Jannero Pargo. They will be returning to New Orleans after playing the past season in Oklahoma. It is expected to be an emotional season for them.
Key Acquisition: Zach Randolph
New York on paper has got to be one of the more solid teams in the NBA. Too bad paper doesn’t seem to be everything. Chemistry is till the thing that keeps this team from winning. They have to play to their potential and give the Knicks fans something to cheer about.
Key Acquisition: Rashard Lewis
They signed Lewis to a multi-year contract, it is now his time to prove that he is worth the money. Dwight Howard and Rashard Lewis needs to co-exist so that the Magic can be a force in the East.
Key Acquisition: none
This is the year that Andre Iguodala proves that he can lead the 76ers franchise. They have a nice balanced lineup and they also drafted a nice looking rookie in Thaddeus Young. Samuel Dalembert will have to control the paint and Andre Miller needs to distribute the ball for this team to get some wins.
Key Acquisitions: Shaquille O’Neal, Grant Hill
The exodus of The Big Cactus to the valley of the Suns was a huge gamble for Steve Kerr and Mike D’Antoni. Shaq will never be able to run like Marion and he is not getting younger. But he will bring a huge presence in the post. He can also trigger the break by grabbing rebounds. They also added veteran forward Grant Hill who have seemingly regained some of the skills he once possessed. This can be the deal that can get Phoenix over the hump.
Key Acquisition: Greg Oden
The Trail Blazers got the young Greg Oden as the first pick of the draft. It will be interesting to see how he will be able to handle himself when facing much bigger men in the NBA. Brandon Roy and Jarett Jack will be depended upon to score the points for Portland. This is a young team that could surprise some people.
Key Acquisitions: Mikki Moore, Beno Udrih
Bibby’s departure leaves Kevin Martin as the main scorer in Sacramento. They added some veterans that can hopefully help develop the young guys. Beno Udrih has big shoes to fill in after Bibby’s departure and it will be nice to see how plays as a starter. Ron Artest also needs to step up his play in order for the Kings to get back into the playoffs.
Key Acquisitions: Damon Stoudamire, Kurt Thomas
They beefed up their roster with the signing of veterans, Stoudamire and Thomas. The defending champs have a great chance of getting a repeat for the first time. They are still one of the teams to beat in the upcoming season. It will be tough facing the big three of Duncan, Parker and Ginobili.
Key Acquisitions: Kevin Durant, Jeff Green
No doubt the Sonics are rebuilding. They gave up two of their best players (Ray Allen and Rashard Lewis) and decided to go with youth. They got Kevin Durant and Jeff Green, two rookies who can definitely play. Durant will be the new face of the Sonics from now on. They are definitely a lottery team.
Key Acquisitions: Jamario Moon, Carlos Delfino
The improvement of Chris Bosh and company gives Toronto a chance to once again win the Atlantic division. Jose Calderon has been playing great basketball and it seemed like they picked up a “diamond in the roughs” in undrafted rookie Jamario Moon. They also got Carlos Delfino who have championship experience with the Detroit Pistons. Things are looking up for the Canadian franchise.
Key Acquisition: Kyle Korver
They finally have a great shooter in Kyle Korver, who will make their inside-out game much improved. Deron Williams and Carlos Boozer has been superb this past season, and the plays of Andrei Kirilenko and Mehmet Okur definitely makes Utah one of the favorites to win the Northwest division.
Key Acquisition: none
Washington have three All-Stars in their lineup, Arenas, Butler and Jamison. They are a strong team but their bench needs to do their roles to help them stay as one of the top teams from the East. Their stars need to stay away from injuries because they have a very thin bench.
