Chapter 20

Peja made another three point shot as Sacramento took a commanding 120 to 81 lead over Minnesota. Sit looked behind and couldn’t believe that there were still fans in the stadium. He convinced himself they were probably drunk.
“Get open!” Mark screamed from the sideline to no avail.
Mike Bibby failed to intercept the ball but did stop play by knocking it out. The fans in the stands booed as the ref handed the ball to Garnett. Garnett passed the ball into Mark Madsen who looked very reluctant and passed it straight back out to Troy Hudson.
“Shoot the damn thing!” Mark stomped his feet on the ground, “Freaking shoot!”
Hudson shot the ball and missed; he had missed all of his shots so far in the game.
Brad Miller gathered in the miss and passed to Bibby who ran the full length of the court. The guard then went up for a lay up and surprisingly missed. Hudson got the rebound and dribbled up but Bibby came up from behind and hit the ball out of his hands. Peja took the ball this time and dribbled to the perimeter. He swung it round to Garcia.
“Drive now!” Shareef cried out.
Garcia put the ball to the court and went up strong. The ball went in but Kandi was on the floor, he took the charge.
The ref blew his whistle as Kandi got off the court and yelled in jubilation.
“It’s a foul, two shots!” the ref called.
Kandi stopped and turned around to see the ref, “What you smoking ref?”
The ref ignored him as Kandi moved closer and started protesting louder.
“If you don’t be quiet, I will need to ‘T’ you,” The ref warned Kandi.
“Hey, you blind or something?” Kandi asked, “I don’t know what you did last night but you got to wake up now ref!”
And with that, Kandi playfully slapped the ref’s face and the ref blew his whistle. Garnett and Madsen were trying to hold Kandi back before Eddie Griffin ran from off the bench and tackled the ref. Sit watched in horror as Mark Moore jumped on the court as well.
“Mark, stop your players!” Sit shouted.
Eddie Griffin was continually hitting the ref who was now lying in a heap on the floor, covering his face. Kandi joined in as well, kicking the ref in the sides. Garnett, Madsen, Mark and others were trying to hold the two men back.
“What the hell!” screamed a Wolves assistant.
The crowd was beginning to get louder and began chanting, ‘Fight, fight, fight!’ Sit shook his head and stood up, hitting his own forehead trying to comprehend what was going on. Kandi and Griffin were finally pulled away from the ref. The ref was helped up, blood dripping out of his nostrils and mouth. It looked like he couldn’t stay up. Kings players helped the ref to the side; as he moved to the sideline there was a trail of blood behind him.
“All right,” A security guard said, “Get out of here.”
A group of staff led Kandi and Griffin off the court and as they got near the tunnel, Griffin lifted his arms in the air and then hit his chest with his right fist. He screamed as the crowd cheered back.
An official walked up to Sit and Mark, “We’re calling this game off.”
Sit nodded as Mark was wiping his hands before they turned around to see a section of the crowd fighting. Security was running up the aisles as fans were throwing anything at them. Children were stuck in the middle of it as drunken men were throwing themselves at each other. It was a while before the chaos could be controlled.

Sit sat in the team’s meeting room. He was reading the newspaper on the incident before. The match official who had been bashed had head injuries amongst many other minor problems.
“He’s probably going to sue us,” Sit sighed to Mark and Flo.
He then looked at another report about Michael Olowokandi and Eddie Griffen.
“They’re going to be suspended and probably charged with assault.” Sit predicted.
Then he put the paper down, “We’re really screwed over.”
Mark and Flo were quiet before the rest of the Timberwolves’ staff entered into the room.
Sit started to talk, “I called this emergency meeting because of what happened last night. As the GM, I’ve decided that we will need to upgrade our security measures at the stadium. Any suggestions?”
Everyone looked at each other before Anthony raised his hand, “What about we limit the amount of alcohol we sell?”
Sit shook his head, “Basketball games attract mainly middle aged, middle class males. If we limit alcohol, I doubt we would get many people coming to games.”
Henry then put his hand up, “What about we employ more security staff?”
Sit nodded, “That’s what I’ve been thinking. How are we going to get the extra money though?”
Henry shrugged, “Raise ticket prices?”
Sit laughed, “The way we been playing, we need to lower ticket prices to get more people to our games!”
No one said anything after that and Sit stood up, “Good then, Let me introduce you to our new head of security; Mr Srbija.”
Srbija walked into the room and nodded before taking a seat at the end of the table.
“Srbija has a lot of experience working in maximum security prisons across Australia,” Sit said, “He will overlook all the security here and make any recommendations on how we can improve our services in the future.”
Sit then smiled, “And I also have acquired the services of Mr Andrew Watson. He will now be our official stat keeper and also team statistical analyst. I’ve secured his parole from jail so just keep anything valuable hidden from him if you see him. He will be joining the franchise next week.”
Many of the guys looked at each other weirdly before Mark asked, “So is that the meeting?”
Sit shook his head, “It’s a crisis meeting so I need to ask you guys a few favours.”
Sit pointed at Henry, “Henry, get to your sources and try and limit any more of the bad media about last night. We can’t let anymore news getting published.”
Henry nodded, “I will do my best.”
“Anthony, you need to get a good defence lawyer for Kandi and Eddie. We need to make sure they don’t get charged with anything,” Sit said, “I suggest you get someone to convince the ref to not pursue charges if we pay him compensation under the table. We can’t go to court.”
Anthony nodded, “You can count on me.”
Sit looked at Mark, “Coach, I need you to do something about David Stern. I don’t want my players suspended ok?”
Mark looked uncertain, “I don’t think I can do much about it though.”
“Fine,” Sit said, “I will take care of the NBA. Mark, tell your players that there’s no more training this season.”
Mark was surprised, “What? Why no more training?”
Sit explained, “It’s been tough. Maybe if we give them time off, we can get them to relax a bit. I’m looking to get ready for next season rather than finish this one too well. We only got one game left after all.”
Mark frowned, “Yeah, all right.”
“Ok, that’s it then! Let’s get cracking!”

Sit was in his office on the phone to David Stern, “Mr Stern, you know how tough my job is. We really need those two guys for the last game of the season.”
“Mr Sit,” Stern said, “The League is like any other place in society. We have rules to abide by.”
“Rules are made to be broken Sir,” Sit joked.
Stern didn’t take it as a joke, “If that’s your attitude then, I can’t say anything else.”
“Wait,” Sit pleaded, “Is there anything we can do? I seriously promise that this won’t happen again. We will pay you everything that will compensate of the bad publicity.”
“You don’t understand do you?” Stern asked, “The League can’t be viewed as soft.”
“Come on, it’s the end of the season. What about you delay the decision?” Sit questioned him.
“Ok, how much are you willing to pay if I delay my judgement by five days?” Stern said.
“Whatever you guys need,” Sit said, “I suggest you go for a holiday and just don’t say jack all. I will take care of the money part.”
Stern then whispered into the phone, “This is between you and me then. Make sure that money appears in my account.”
Stern hung up and Sit jumped out of his chair and began to dance as Flo walked in.
“You know you look stupid?” Flo laughed.
Sit shook his head and switched his stereo on and Boom Shake Shake the Room blasted out loudly.
Flo put a few documents on Sit’s desk, “Here’s some scouting reports.”
“Good,” Sit said, “So you got Moses in there?”
“And a few others,” Flo said before leaving.
Sit sat down and began looking at them.

Flo looked at the shortlist of players that Sit had given to him. Sit had told Flo to ring the players’ agents to arrange workouts with the team. Mark Moore and Alex Buckley walked into the office.
“Here to get the latest inside scoop?” Flo joked with the newly employed Head of Public Relations.
“No, no,” Buckley said, “I came to look at what players Mr Sit wants, sir.”
Mark hit the kid in the back, “Don’t need any of that sir stuff around here kid.”
Buckley nodded, “Yes sir.”
Flo then showed Mark one of the scouting reports.
“Haji Iwanaka,” Mark said, “I think I heard of him before.”
Flo nodded, “Big man from somewhere in Africa. He’s 21 and on their senior national team.”
Buckley chipped in, “If I may say that he’s 6’11” and is very athletic. He excels in defence and inside scoring.”
Flo was impressed, “And what are his weaknesses?”
Buckley said, “That’s easy. He’s still unknown because he plays very few minutes in the European League and he’s only been playing for maybe two years. He used to play volleyball.”
“Sounds interesting,” Mark said, “Explains his athleticism and you’ve projected him as the second pick.”
Flo looked at the shortlist and gave another report to Mark.
“Grant Galanov,” Mark said, “You’ve projected him to be third hey?”
“Yes, I know he hasn’t even been to college and has spent most of his time in the CBA for the last few years,” Flo said.
Mark shook his head, “No, we can’t take him. I don’t think he’s ready.”
“CBA MVP, great power player. I compare him to Garnett, sir,” Buckley said.
Mark still shrugged, “We already got a Garnett. We don’t need another one.”
“What about Quint Hamilton?” Flo asked as he handed another report to Mark.
“You got him at eight?” Mark said in surprise, “I think he’s better than Galanov.”
“A junior from Utah,” Buckley said, “I don’t think he’s got great potential but who knows.”
Flo nodded, “Small forward and is friends with Andrew Bogut and knows Keith Van Horn. What about this guy?”
Mark looked at the next report, “I can’t even say his name. First name Johnny, last name…”
The last name was a tough one to pronounce and Buckley looked at the name printed: Ibeabuchi.
“Hey, I know who he is!” Mark laughed, “He’s that Nigerian kid.”
Flo nodded, “Yeah, this one is a bit older. He plays for Maccabi Tel Aviv and he’s a relative of the heavyweight boxer.”
Buckley added, “He’s a strong shooting guard. He doesn’t have much of a shot. He’s just strong and a team player but you got him as number four. I think you’re overrating him a bit there Mr Ruf.”
Flo shrugged, “I think he’s one of the better conditioned players around and plus, who doesn’t want a team player?”
“Seal Everett is a small forward from Oklahoma State and a friend of Joey Graham,” Mark read one more report.
“He’s got good upside, athletic, court smarts and plays defence,” Flo added, “He’s the best Sophomore prospect in the draft and one of the better College players.”
“I like him and you got him at six. Let me guess, Moses is number one sir?” Buckley questioned Flo.
Flo smiled, “Of course!”

* * *

It was dark and quiet in the room. It was raining outside as the wailing of sirens could be heard going past quickly. An old lady was fast asleep at the side of the bed where her son was also sleeping. She was holding on tightly to his hand in the dimly lit room. Suddenly, there was a high pitched beeping sound filled the room. The lady woke up and slowly opened her eyes. She looked to the side of the room and looked at the heart rate monitor screen. There was a flat line and she began to panic. She got up and started to scream. She frantically pushed the ‘Emergency’ button on the panel on the wall.
“Help! Doctors!” she screamed as she ran out the door.
A nurse rushed in before a doctor ran into the room.
“We’re losing him,” the Nurse shouted as she tried to get his heart going again.
Another nurse came in, pushing the defibrillator to the side of the bed.
“Get the Oxygen,” ordered the doctor, “Prepare the patient for defibrillation!”
The nurses moved quickly as the doctor took the two large metal paddles.
“Charge,” he said as he placed the two paddles on the patient.
The patient’s body lifted off the bed’s surface for a second before falling back. There was no change on the screen.
“Let’s put it up a notch!” the Doctor shouted after the nurse said there was no response.
“Charge,” he said before repeating the action.
“The patient responded!” the Nurse cried out as she looked on the hear rate monitor screen.
The Doctor switched the room’s light off and walked out to speak to the woman, “Mam, your son should be ok for now.”
“Thank you doctor,” the lady cried, tears rolling down the sides of her face.
The doctor then suggested, “However, you should be prepared for the worst. I’m not sure if he will be able to fight it anymore. His body is weak and if we don’t get him to have the surgery soon, it might be too late.”

Why Did Stern Go?

New York – As the NBA is waiting for the announcement of the punishments that will be served to Michael Olowokandi and Eddie Griffin, Commish David Stern somehow finds the time to go on a holiday?

To Cuba?

At a time like this when two players ganged up on a mathc official in a recent game, it seems to me that it's not the most appropriate time to go on a holiday. And I must say once again, to Cuba???

The reason why people don't think too highly of the NBA too much anymore is things like this that happens. Stern disappearing is just not good for the League.

And in an even stranger turn of events, the ref who had suffered head injuries and trated with a lot of stitches has just said that he won't pursue any assualt charges and the police down there in Minnesota have stopped investigating the case.

And I'm not supposed to suggest that Hush Money has been involved. So I won't.

So let me re-emphasise what I been talking about. Stern goes on holiday, Ref says he won't sue, Police have stopped investigating. And Stern is going to, of all places, Cuba? Whatever he's smoking must be high class!

But don't you all think something fishy is going on?
