Re: [8-8] The New Jailblazers | Week 5 Recap (!!!)

Postby Lamrock on Sun Nov 18, 2012 8:58 am

Thanks guys. The reason recaps are so fast is that I've been posting a month's worth of back logged write ups. To answer an earlier question though, I usually play one game per in-game week and will hopefully play each team at least once. Future seasons may have more simming though.

Damian Lillard Wins West Rookie of the Month!

Second among rookies in scoring, first in assists, three point and free throw percentage, Lillard has been a huge force for the Blazers, and is well in the mix for rookie of the year. The Blazers sit at 8-8, a mark most expected to be lower, but the rookie from Weber State seems to be the real deal.

Not a bad start to the year at 8-8 since you're right there in the Playoff race. All the stats look realistic, even the brutal bench you have to deal with. Keep it up man - this is one of the best on the board right now.

Good to see you in playoff contention. Lillard's a success so far - LA playing an All-Star season again. I think you're bench is underachieving a bit though. Hopefully you can get more from your reserves.

Red Mamba, Thanks dude. To publicly respond to your PM so it's clear to everybody, things like signature shots and various details that make your player unique can be easily added by request.

Sit, James Posey was a big addition, but I could certainly use help at nearly every position. We'll see how it goes.

hova-, Trouble is, my bench isn't underachieving. They're just that bad. I'm forced to use Nolan Smith as my sixth man and he's not very good but the only one who can get his own shot.

Lillard and Aldridge kick ass in the game though, so hopefully they can keep us above water.

Those FA get so much money. (Flynn, Oden both want like 5M per) I wish they would fix that.

Good start, not over-achieving and Lillard being a beast he is. (Y)

BEHIND THE SCENES

Chapter 2: So Long, J.J.?

Liam Washburn and Neil Olshey were in their offenses honestly not doing much of anything when Paul Allen came in. Liam quickly pulled up the scouting report for Fresh Smith on his computer. "I need you in my office, stat. Sorry, not you, Liam."

Liam sat nervously as the general manager and owner discussed the team. After 45 minutes, Olshey returned. "Sorry about that. We're about to make a trade."

"A trade? We're doing fine!"

"Yes, but we've lost three straight now, and if you think this roster can make the playoffs, I'd have a bridge to sell you with your severance pay. We needed a center, and I think we've found him. You have to tell J.J. the bad news. Both of them."

Liam thought for half a second. "So who did we get?"

"Well, it's looking like we're getting Chuck Hayes and this dude named honeybucket or something."

Liam breathed a sigh of relief, then had to dish the news that Hickson (who was coming off a 17 and 13 game) and Jeffries would be playing in Excremento. "Well, on the bright side, they'll probably move to Seattle in a couple years," Liam said before leaving to avoid getting punched.

----------

Liam was nervous about the first game post-trade, against the Kings of all teams, J.J. Hickson played solidly in his first game back as a Sacramento King, but Hayes did his job, and Honeycutt was very impressive, hitting jumper after jumper against his former team.

"Honey Buckets! So what do you think of the trade now, Liam," asked Olshey.

"Time will tell. I guess a 6'6" center does beat the alternative."

"Damn right. Now drink up son, you don't know how much of a pain in the ass it was to sneak these beers in."

WEEK SIX: Dec. 1 - Dec. 8 my ongoing bad with the 6 & 8 day weeks
Team Record: 9-11 (1-3) | 5th in division, T-10th in conference)

Image

It was a trying week for the Blazers, who dropped two seemingly winnable games en route to an 1-3 week that eventually led to a response from the front office. Despite J.J. Hickson coming along, he was dealt along with veteran Jared Jeffries to the Kings for Chuck Hayes and Tyler Honeycutt. It remains to be seen whether a 6'6" center is the answer to the Blazers' defensive woes, but they won their first game (against those same Kings mind you) and this team seems committed - for now - to winning games.

Redd An Unlikely Hero As Cavs Beat Blazers
12/1/12 - Blazers 99 @ Cavaliers 104

Portland's three game winning streak came to an end in Cleveland. Despite J.J. Hickson playing his best game of the season against his former team, the backcourt of Kyrie Irving and Michael Redd carried the Cavs to a victory.

POR 25 28 25 22 | 99 [8-9] - Hickson: 26/5/0, 11-15 FG; Batum: 16/8/6
CLE 24 26 25 29 | 104 [5-12] - Irving: 24/4/10; Redd: 24/2/1, 9-11 FG, 4-4 3pt

Blazers Collapse In Fourth, Fall To Bobcats
12/3/12 - Blazers 93 @ Bobcats 95

By overcoming an 18 point halftime deficit, the Charlotte Bobcats now have the peace of mind, knowing that no matter what, they won't be the worst team ever. Infact, the win improves them to 9-7, good for 6th in the East.

POR 24 25 18 26 | 93 [8-10] - Lillard; 16/6/8; Aldridge: 17/8/2
CHA 15 16 25 39 | 95 [9-7] - Kidd-Gilchrist: 15/11/3; B. Gordon: 19/3/3

Granger, Pacers Dominate Portland
12/5/12 - Blazers 76 @ Pacers 100

Portland follows their three game road winning streak with three consecutive road losses to post a fair 3-4 record on their 7 game road swing. However, it ended poorly with Danny Granger dropping 35 points and the Pacers winning by 24. Nearly everybody was off their game for the Blazers, who fall to 8-11.

POR 23 12 18 22 | 76 [8-11] - Hickson: 17/13/1; Aldridge: 16/10/1
IND 30 20 23 27 | 100 [10-9] - Granger; 35/5/3; Augustin: 18/7/8

Blazers trade J.J. Hickson, Jared Jeffries to Sacramento for Chuck Hayes, Tyler Honeycutt

Image

December 7, 2012 - The Trail Blazers take on the big contract of Chuck Hayes to fill the defensive void at the Center position while also acquiring a project in Honeycutt. It comes at a cost however as starting power forward J.J. Hickson returns to his former team. Hickson was starting to play well for Portland, but the Blazers, near the bottom of the league in defensive efficiency, knew they needed to acquire a true Center, and get one in 6'6" Chuck Hayes.

While Hickson did not play well during his tenure with the Kings, the team was more of a financial one as they dump the 3 year, $17 million contract of Hayes. "I must have done something right for them to acquire me again, I guess," chucked Hickson in an interview. The Kings also take on the smaller deal of Jared Jeffries, who may take over the role of DeMarcus Cousins's backup.

The Trail Blazers also waived forward Shawne Williams this morning.

Hayes, Honeycutt Combine For 15 As Blazers Win By As Much
12/8/12 - Kings 92 @ Blazers 107

Image

In the first game since the deal that sent J.J. Hickson and Jared Jeffries to the Kings for Chuck Hayes and Tyler Honeycutt, the Blazers and Kings faced off against each other. Thanks to that fact, all players involved with the deal were cleared to play just a day after the trade, almost unprecedented. The Blazers got solid production from their players across the board, but Jeffries posted a DNP for Sacramento, who couldn't overcome a lights out shooting performance from Portland.

Honeycutt had 9 points and 4 boards in his impressive debut, while Chuck Hayes had 6 points and 7 boards in a starting role. Hickson also had a solid outing for the Kings with 7 points and 6 rebounds, but he suffered through some foul trouble. Portland improves to 9-11 on the season.

Not sure on the Hickson trade, as he has a pretty decent player, but you've got more of a defensive-mind in Hayes so good luck with how he turns out. (Y)

Hope you rebound from the 1-3 week, and I know it was a tough loss to the Bobcats, that would have pissed me off...

Wow, this is somewhat a GM Hova trade: you want a "real" center and add a 6-6 Chuck Hayes? I mean, he's a good defender IRL and the game, but won't give you shotblocking or any offense at all. I don't know, especially with his big contract. Not a good deal imho, let's hope Honeycutt can continue to play like this. You could have gotten more for Hickson I guess.

Surprised to see the reaction to the trade. Hickson's a bit overrated in 2K in my opinion but I suppose taking on Hayes's contract is the real sacrifice. At 6'6", he can't really block shots or finish, but he's an absolute beast on the boards and allows me to play Aldridge at the 4. Hayes/Leonard is a decent center rotation. Honeycutt meanwhile is tall, not awful on D and can hit the open jumper, so I could see him as the backup SF of the future as a poor man's Rashard Lewis.

Jared Jeffries couldn't get minutes because Meyers Leonard is better, while Hickson's inability to guard the Center position and redundancy with Aldridge on the roster made him very expendable. Honestly, I feel like I owned Sac-Town in the trade, but time will tell as J.J. Hickson could pan out to be a good player.

NLSC CHALLENGE: Banner Time

Not to rip off Sit's association by doing exactly the same thing as he did, but here's the same thing he did. I could use some banners for my game recaps, and would love to see what you guys could do. Best banner (no idea how many entries I'll get) gets a spot in the 2013 draft class. Those who already have a spot and participate get a ratings boost.

Essentially, what I'm looking for is a nice banner for the game recaps and perhaps behind the scenes as well. Thanks guys. :)

WEEK SEVEN: Nov. 9 - Nov. 16

The Blazers had a very solid week. They only played two games but they won both of them, including a big win over the San Antonio Spurs. Portland improves to .500 and is 3-0 since the Chuck Hayes trade. Portland coach Neil Olshey said "a lot of people thought we were one of those teams you could write off as a lottery team, but I seriously think we could make a run here".

Lillard Rescues Blazers Against Raptors
12/10/12 - Raptors 94 @ Blazers 96

At home against the lowly Raptors, the Blazers entered the game as major favorites, but they underestimated their opponent and found themselves trailing in the fourth. Thankfully, Damian Lillard made up for LaMarcus Aldridge's poor performance to lead the Blazers to their second consecutive win.

TOR 27 21 22 24 | 94 [4-17] - Bargnani: 24/8/1; Lowry: 18/3/8
POR 23 24 18 31 | 96 [10-11] - Lillard: 28/0/6; Matthews: 19/4/2

Blazers Back To .500 With Dominant Second Half
12/13/12 - Spurs 87 @ Blazers 97

In a nationally televised game, the Blazers proved they belonged in the playoff win with a huge victory over the Spurs. San Antonio came out strong early on but the Blazers locked down on D in the second quarter. The third period saw the Spurs' shooting go cold and LaMarcus Aldridge score 14 of his 32 points.

The Blazers managed to hang on to the lead in a high scoring fourth quarter. With three minutes to go and the Blazers up 14, coach Terry Stotts pulled the starters for an all-bench lineup. San Antonio proceded to go on an 8-0 run before the starters came in and Aldridge delivered the final daggers.

With the win, the Blazers improve to 11-11 on the season, putting them just a game and a half back from the Denver Nuggets for 8th place. San Antonio's record now stands at 17-7, which is still good for first place in the Western Conference.

SA 28 17 25 27 | 87 [17-7] - Parker: 16/5/14; Ginobili: 21/1/4
POR 24 22 26 25 | 97 [11-11] - Aldridge: 32/11/2; Batum: 17/4/4

Nice to see you guys at .500. (Y) I like the Chuck Hayes trade. Having used Chuck Hayes a lot in 2K11, he's very useful cleaning up the boards and he's also a very underrated passer. Don't expect to get very much scoring from him though, his size severely cripples him from finishing inside against bigger bigs. A bucket a game is a good enough contribution from him on that end of the floor.

WEEK EIGHT: Dec. 17 - Dec. 23
Team Record: 12-13 (1-2)

Image

The Blazers opened the week with a huge double overtime win against the New Orleans Hornets, in which Aldridge dropped 39 and 15. Aldridge maintained his high level of play to win the Western Conference Player of the Week award. Unfortunately, the Blazers lost the next two games to post a 1-2 week.

Blazers Prevail In Double Overtime Classic
12/16/12 - Hornets 113 @ Blazers 114 [2OT]

LaMarcus Aldridge had 39 points 15 rebounds and 4 blocks and the Blazers needed every bit of it as they overcame a fifteen point fourth quarter deficit to prevail in double overtime against the pesky Hornets. The Hornets, likely headed to the lottery, got a huge game from Eric Gordon, which just wasn't enough. Portland meanwhile improves to 12-11, putting them in eighth place for the time being.

In a game that was far closer than the score suggested, the Nuggets defeated the Blazers soundly in Portland. The game was quite competitive in the first three quarters though, with Nicolas Batum and LaMarcus Aldridge offering consistent scoring. Unfortunately, Portland went cold from the field and couldn't stop the Nuggets, who turned the game into a blowout in the fourth.

Wilson Chandler and Ty Lawson had huge games for the Nuggets, while Aldridge led Portland with 27, but grabbed a measly 2 rebounds. Portland falls to 12-12 and out of the playoff picture while the streaking Nuggets improve to 17-10, good for first in the division.

Beasley, Suns Out-Duel Aldridge, Blazers
12/22/12 - Suns 99 @ Blazers 92

Portland looked to be control coming off a blowout loss, dominating the first quarter against the surprisingly solid Phoenix Suns. However, Michael Beasley and co. had other plans, as the slowly chipped away at the lead, before making a big run to win the game in the fourth. LaMarcus Aldridge did all he could, dropping 36 points, but Michael Beasley had 34 himself, while Shannon Brown chipped in 23.

The game looked all but over with a 7 point spread and thirty seconds to go, but Wesley Matthews made the Suns sweat with a pair of three point makes, but ultimately, Phoenix won the intentional foul game. With the loss, Portland falls under .500 again, while the Suns continue to ascend the West standings.
