Gamepad stopped working

Talk about NBA Live 07 here.

Gamepad stopped working

Postby fjccommish on Wed Oct 10, 2007 1:10 pm

After a year of playing Live '07 without a hitch, tonight the gamepad stopped working.

It works to get past the video in the opening screen, but once a game starts the gamepad (selected as controller) does nothing. Players can't be moved, they won't shoot, etc.

I've tried changing USB ports, updating controller drivers, re-installing controller drivers, re-calibrating, even purchasing a new controller. Nothing works.

System Specs:

Operating System (Get Updates) Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 (Build 2600)

System Memory 2048.5

Processor Speed 13997.1

DirectX Version (Get Updates) 9.0c

Display Device (Get Drivers) NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GTX

Display Memory 256.0

Display Driver 6.14.11.6371

Sound Device (Get Drivers) Realtek AC97 Audio

Sound Driver 5.10.5750

Gamepad: Generic USB Gamepad (have used this since NBA Live 2006, it has always worked. It worked for a game this morning, then stopped working this evening.)

One button does work. Start button brings the game into pause menu.

What's with the triple posting within 30 minutes? You could use the edit button since nobody replied.

Try changing the controller configuration preset(Logitech Dual Action, RumblePad, etc.).

Forgot about editing. There's no delete for posts.

Already tried going through all the available configs. None of them work. Since I've had Live '07 I've used the same gamepad, the generic USB purchased from Gamestop, with "Generic" config.

It worked this morning. It worked this afternoon. Now it doesn't work.

When the game is loaded, the controller works in configure controller from the main screen: Options - Configure Controller. Generic config can be changed, buttons reassigned, etc.
When a game is loaded, the controller works to get past the opening screen. Then it doesn't work.

***As I wrote this, it started working. I played into the 4th quarter but then the game crashed. When I reloaded the game and tried to PLAY NOW, it crashed again. When I loaded and tried to PLAY NOW a second time, the game worked but once again the controller does not work.***

There is a delete for posts, but you can only delete your last post if someone hasn't posted after it. There will be a little "X" button to the right of the edit button.

It sounds like your controller is dying. Wait, you said you even bought a new controller adn the same thing is happening? Do you have any other games that you can troubleshoot with to see if your controller is working properly? Have you tried reinstalling the game?

UPDATE: The controller also works in Madden Football. NBA Live 2007 is the only game having trouble with controllers.

The old controller never started working. The new controller began working. That's the one I used to play into the 4th Q before the crash. Now, once again, it's not working.

The old and new controllers both:

- Show all elements as functioning properly. (USB elements in hardware device manager.)

- Configure and calibrate properly, and appear to be working in the game controller item in Control Panel.

- Work with MVP 2005 and a game called Reach, a boxing game.

A few days ago NBA Live 2007 began crashing whenever any element was saved. That included rosters, dynasties, playoffs. I deleted the saves folder, then it began working fine. Not sure if that has anything to do with this.

That's probably a good diagnosis since the controller config files are located in the My Documents/NBA Live 07, as well as all saves.

Try renaming the directory. When you start live, it will remake the directory from scratch, just as if you reinstalled the game. The rosters asn settings will all be default, but you can try a game and see if your controller works again and if you still experience crashes.

You can also run a chkdsk command in windows which will search your drive for errors and attempt to fix any that it finds.

Microsoft wrote:Manual steps to run Chkdsk at the command prompt
1. Click Start, and then Run.
2. In Open, type cmd, and then press ENTER.
3. Use one of the following procedures:
• To run Chkdsk in read-only mode, at the command prompt, type chkdsk, and then press ENTER.
• To repair errors without scanning the volume for bad sectors, at the command prompt, type chkdsk volume:/f, and then press ENTER.

Note If one or more of the files on the hard disk are open, you will receive the following message:
Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)
Type Y, and then press ENTER to schedule the disk check, and then restart your computer to start the disk check.
• To repair errors, locate bad sectors, and recover readable information, at the command prompt, type chkdsk volume:/r, and then press ENTER.

Manual steps to run Chkdsk from My Computer or Windows Explorer
1. Double-click My Computer, and then right-click the hard disk that you want to check.
2. Click Properties, and then click Tools.
3. Under Error-checking, click Check Now. A dialog box that shows the Check disk options is displayed,
4. Use one of the following procedures:
• To run Chkdsk in read-only mode, click Start.
• To repair errors without scanning the volume for bad sectors, select the Automatically fix file system errors check box, and then click Start.
• To repair errors, locate bad sectors, and recover readable information, select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box, and then click Start.
Note If one or more of the files on the hard disk are open, you will receive the following message:
The disk check could not be performed because the disk check utility needs exclusive access to some Windows files on the disk. These files can be accessed by restarting Windows. Do you want to schedule the disk check to occur the next time you restart the computer?
Click Yes to schedule the disk check, and then restart your computer to start the disk check.
