EA loses market share for it Basketball title.

Sat Oct 14, 2006 5:53 am

Hey All,

I found this story on yahoo, I'm glad EA finally is seeing the bubble burst!

Deutsche Bank analyst Jeetil Patel said in a client note that the video game industry faced an easy year-over-year comparison since September 2005 sales were down 24 percent, and that last month's sales were down 3 percent from September 2004.

Patel expects publishers to beat his fiscal second-quarter estimates, but said that "more than the good news has already been priced in."

He noted that EA's "NBA Live 07" basketball game sell-through fell 10 percent, while Take-Two's 2K Sports' competing "NBA 2K7" game sell-through doubled off a much smaller base. Patel noted that EA, the world's biggest video game publisher known for its sports franchises, has seen its September basketball market share fall to 64 percent from 86 percent a year ago.

In a recent interview with Reuters, EA Chief Executive Larry Probst addressed concerns about the company's high-profile basketball game: "We will make some changes so we can bring a higher quality product and improve it next year."

That's a pretty big drop for EA.
Hopefully that'll teach them to respect their customers a bit more and to stop doing half-assed jobs, cuz they have some serious competition now...

at least this might wake them up and make them realise what a shit effort 07 was and make the patch really good

Sat Oct 14, 2006 11:06 am

On 2nd reading of the quote, it seems like same old political bs, oh we'll do better next year...yada,yada,yada. Let's hope internally, they are putting the pressure on the developers to test the game next year.

Let's hope they all get fired, or throw some money at some 2k guys to defect.

I just say switch the teams, or create a new one. The base of this game has some strong points, animation is decent, graphics are livable for now, and the controls, when they do actually work, are IMO better than 2k7. I say maybe give the project to another studio for a year, let these guys take a month off to reflect and stew on the irreparable damage theyve done to the franchise, and then let them start on a new version of live. Prolly be the best basketball game ever made. :D

Either that, or start docking each individual employee 100 dollars for every quarter point that ea's stock drops until the patch is released. Guaranteed it be done by the end of next week.

i think that sums it all up (Y)

The one to really blame are the executives or the president of EA. They wanted to release the game as early as possible to make profit. They should hire hundreds of workers, much in quality control.

The new features are good but the stupid careless errors (bugs), make the game lousy.

Andrew, on your visit to EA to beta test this game, did it have these kind of bugs? maybe the bugs came on some last minute changes before the release date.

PS.

I think the executives of EA should follow the footsteps of Sony PS3 executives. Instead of releasing their product at an earlier date, they waited until they perfected it. (man, ps3 should be good so that i wont eat my words. hehe)

Im already more than a little concerned about next years version...

Hopefully the bomb getting dropped on the production team isnt too bad or else we'll have new guys trying another new direction with the game.
Or worse off, maybe no pc version at all...

Oh well, 2k has my attention this year...again.

As I've said before I didn't notice them but that's not to say they weren't there. I've touched on that here.

And don't forget the Need For Speed series :)

See right now people are asking should I get Live 07 or should I get 2K7.

Going by the EA trend this question will no longer need to be asked in the future.

OR maybe he just doesn't like it. Which is hard to believe. I mean, I gotta give 360 2k7 credit but the current gens are exactly the same. Except for the signature stuff. 8-)

Hey Andew, did EA ever say anything about how they test the game at all? Do they go through a full 25 seasons and see what issues come about from that? It would be impossible to test 12 min games for 82 games and 25 seasons, but we found these bugs within days...

Mon Oct 16, 2006 5:45 pm

No, they didn't really talk about that. We did see the QA section on our tour though.
