Talk about NBA Live 06 here.

Isn't this a bad thing...?

Sun Sep 18, 2005 8:36 am

For NBA Live 06, isnt it bad how a player can only have one freestyle super-star ability on offence and of defence? I mean take McGrady as an example...He is a scorer and a highflyer on offence (in real life), and iI have no idea what he is on defence, but wouldn't it be more realistic if he (and other players) had more than one freestyle superstar on offence and defence if they got it in real life?...

Vince Carter (In real life):
Offence: Scorer, Highflyer
Defence: Not sure.

Vince Carter (Live 06)
Offence: Scorer, Highflyer (but you can only choose one and thats so not realistic).
Defence: Not sure.

or they could take them all out and you would have nothing.

The problem with that is that there are a certain amount of buttons for Freestyle Superstars, and its impossible to be able to use two at once because there isn't enough buttons.

i think lots of ppl are forgetting dat the casual buttons for dunk, layup or watever is STILL AVAILABLE, so i dont see how dats a big problem really.

I actually think that it is a problem...
I'll also take Mcgrady for example, in real life, Mcgrady can shoot threes in ppls face (shooter), dish the ball to yao (playmaker), blow past his defender (outside score?), and finish strong with some crazy dunks (high flyer)... However, in the game, you can only choose t-mac to be one of the things, does is mean that if we want tmac to shoot a bank shot then we cant have him doing behind the back pass to yao? or we take his ability to dunk ON ppl?

So in other words, if we want tmac to shoot threes in ppl's face all day (like in real life), we cant have him to dunk on ppl at the same time? yea, I know it may be true that there's still that "shoot" button, but if u can recall last years live (2005), it was almost impossible to make threes unless ur wide open, if someone is contesting the shot, it would then most likely be off. This is somewhat realistic, since contesting shots do lower the percentage. However, guys like T-mac, Kobe, Carter, Lebron, etc do not really get affected. How many time do u see these guys shoot an open shot in a real game??? Thats where the shooter ability comes in, Im guessing that by shooting with the freestyle superstar ability enabled, he percentage will be higher, and you will have the ability to shoot in ppls face, and that probably goes the same for other abilities as well, and that's why i thought it might be a bad thing that you cant have more than one ability at a time. Because if you can only make Mcgrady a "shooter", he would only be an upgraded kyle kover, not the mcgrady that we know...

I think what EA can consider is to have users to set up the freestyle superstar buttons the way we want. By this i mean if we want tmac to shoot threes+dunking on ppl+being a playmaker at the same time, we can setup the controls such as "L+shoot" = bank shot, "L+Pass" = "MJ Dunk", "L+ dunk" = behind the back pass", etc. so we can use all the players abilities the way we like. Now i can have Tmac doing all the things he does in real life (well, almost...)

it would be good if we could set up our own controls but other people playing the game and controlling mcgrady will have no idea what the controls would be. Btw this is off topic but on PS2, the L1 (for nba live 05) is to post up, what is it on Xbox? because xbox only hs 2 triggers.

Rocket fans are always on Yao and Tmac nuts, let dem rest geez.....just because Tmac would pass to Yao dont make him a playmaker and i hope EA didnt make him one, Tmac is predominantly a scorer so be happy about dat :D

Sorry if u didn't follow NBA Live series, but by looking at the screenshots, i looks like tmac is a out.scorer+high flyer+shooter+playmaker, but i dunno, screenshots might be wrong, and maybe ur right...

besides, i was juss using mcgrady as an example, as stated in my previous post. i think it only makes sense if someone like tmac can do all those things at once because thats what they do in real life...

I get ur point now..... Tmac could do it all but not with the flare in certain categories and i guess dats why hes "limited"in some cases, so long as A,X,B,Y give me the usual expectations as the buttons did on Live2005 then its all good

Mon Sep 19, 2005 8:54 pm

Ideally we should be able to mix and match abilities, that would be the logical next step. But for the moment it's an improvement (at least in theory) on the current Freestyle control.

Mon Sep 19, 2005 9:13 pm

Have you really every played hoops in real life??? Like ever?

If you have ever played the game you know that somethings limit other things... Like if you have a good feel for the outside shot, you are more likely to look for the shot rather than some fancy pass to your team mate.

And if you have a good day from downtown, you probably won't drive as much or have such a great day from closer in.

I play hoops regularly and I would describe myself as a shooter... Ofcourse not among NBA players, but among my peers. So I usually do shoot. I sill make some great passes and I still sometimes get past my defender, but my main offense is shooting. When my shooting feels a bit off, I usually dish more and more fancy passes and I can usually hit better from closer on in...

Usually I have a good day at something and thus I focus on it rather than try to do something else.

The selection is basically choosing if you're guys mindset is set at "shooter", "highflyer" or "playmaker" etc. It's not really taking away the abilities the guys have. Like T-Mac will still be able to dunk on people, you just won't be able to choose the way you dunk it on his head. Or on the break, the guy can still make the pass, but he won't do it around his head or anything of the sort. I'm sure you can still go for the alley-oop even if your guy isn't a playmaker...

This limitation is mostly due to the button restrictions of the console controllers, but these things are realistic too... I believe you can make great looking plays without ever even touching the freestyle controls, so don't worry about it.

Mon Sep 19, 2005 9:15 pm

While I agree with you for the most part, the ability to switch and/or use multiple moves would also be equally realistic. What you said about mindset is very true but players like Dwyane Wade might make a fancy pass on one trip up the court and soar to the rim for a breathtaking dunk the next. That's where mixing and matching would come in.

Mon Sep 19, 2005 9:29 pm

Hmm, Metsis, I disagree..

A shooter is also very likely to be a playmaker, take me for example

PPG: 20.1

APG: 6.2

RPG: 7.1

BPG: 2.1

So there's a stopper, (semi) inside presence, (i'm a sf) and a playmaker.. so.. if you see what I mean, just because I'm feeling it doesn't mean I won't get an assist..

geez. why did EA even bother putting in this freestyle superstar thing in the first place. it wasn't there before. no one complained.

now look at everyone, OMG (insert player) is a shooter, passer, stopper, shitter, etc.!!! we're all going to die!

Tue Sep 20, 2005 2:19 am

This is just the first time we're seeing the freestlye superstars feature in the game. I'm sure they'll tweak it in the years to come like they constantly do with the freestyle controls.
If they implemented it so we could change the change the superstar type mid-game by holding down the L1 button or tapping it twice, that would be great. But I also like what someone above me posted about mixing a matching controls so you can have your own freestyle superstar config. (Y)

I didn't see the moves listed for that category of Superstar, but it's definitely the one I'm most excited about.

Just try and defend a shitter! Unstoppable!

I think that freestyle superstar option is nothing then limiting of players, its not NBA its not reality its a bad mod in my opinion, i'll choose Kobe to play and i will only can pick one for offence and one for defence,Kobe can play a playmaker and be highflayer and more than that but in Live06 he will be limited like many other NBA players.,WTf' with other players who are not supersars but still they're very good-NOTHING,like they not exist, don't get me wrong,.i'll buy the game but honestly i dont like F'Superstar feature.

all i kno........is........at the end of the day......the game is gonna be tight

Tue Sep 20, 2005 6:05 am

You should be able to change modes ingame, after you call a timeout. This simulates coaches telling the players their roles and whatnot... Maybe EA might consider this in the "Next version" ;) And come out with another Freestyle BS and call it Dynamic Freestyle.

Yes i do play basketball, regularly.

From reading ur post, I noticed that u described urself as a "shooter", now if u were in the NBA, they would make u a "shooter" superstar in the game. You also said that on a day that ur feelin it, ur mindset is focused on shooting, which is what shooters in the NBA supposed to do (If peja hit 5 in a row from 3s, hes not gonna stop...). However, if ur not having a good day shooting, which i believe could happen alot in the game (since they said they didnt want ppl to abuse freestyle superstar), u would try to pass the ball, drive in , etc. which is also what players would do.

With all that been said, do u think mcgrady on a "bad shooting day" will drive to the basket the same way kyle korver would? on "bad shooting days" both of these players would want to drive in, score or get fouled hopefully and pick up some confidence. Now the question is: what's the change that mcgrady will drive inside and finish strong with a dunk while getting fouled? what are kyle korver's chances??

Now if u can see what i mean, as some ppl mentioned before, sure u can still use the "pass button" and "dunk button", but its the freestyle superstar that's what sperates a "great all around player from a "great shooter" from "average players"...

Again, all i'm saying is that if we can setup up freestyle superstar controls so we can include all aspects of a players game, wouldnt that be more realistic? buy maybe not this year....

-If u have carter as a shooter, is it really realistic to see him do a weak dunk or maybe even a lay-up on a break-away?

just a thought,

Tue Sep 20, 2005 6:44 am

wont the actual player stats determine if a player is better than another. TMAC's dunk and inside scoreing are going to be vastly better than Kyle Korvers inside and dunk rating. I believe it will be fine.
