Techniques for drawing fouls to get to the line

Sun May 14, 2006 4:44 pm

I have a hard time getting the FT line. Heck, I average less then the Phoenix Suns do in real life. Those of you that do get to the line regularly. Can you guys give me some techniques? I already have the In-Air Collision Foul and the Charge/Block Foul sliders, both up to 100 but that doesnt help.

Just drive to the basket and you will get fouled almost every time.Which style do you play?

yeah, put the sliders up to 100, and then use the push-off button, then they will slap you, and you go to the line.
no, seriously, its a video game. you dont go to the freethrow line that often. especially since gameplay sucks.

oh, and did i mention increasing quarter lengths?

turn up foul sliders

Increase the foul sliders, attempt a healthy amount of shots in the paint and whenever possible, invite contact with a pump fake before putting up the shot.

The pump-fake method seems to work pretty well. I catch quite a few
fouls from the computer reaching in and it doesn't hurt to just throw
it down hard in the paint because it will get you to the line more
than enough.

yeah just drive 100percent of the time if there are defenders there they will do somethign to you, and 50percent of the time you get fouled.(u always get fouled but its just that 50percent of the time the ref calls it :)

First, let's not be discriminatory, and second, the tactic may be unrealistic but it's one of the only ways to get to the line a respectable amount of times.

No need to throw about insults like that. But which technique are you referring to? Faking to get a defender in the air and initating contact to draw a shooting foul is something players do in real life quite often.

Turning up the foul sliders could be seen as cheap I suppose but seeing as though the user is affected at the other end it adds its own challenge as well as allowing the user to draw more fouls.

Once your opponents reach the team foul limit, give the ball to a good ball handler and cross your opponent over and over again(right analog left-right-left-right...). They will try to steal the ball eventually, but will only come up with a foul most of the time.

For more realistic fouls, here's two steps:

Step one, raise on ball physical defense 75 or higher for user and 45 or higher for CPU. At the default it is way too low and players avoid all contact, with this raised the CPU will bump into you on most dunks and inside shots.

Step two, raise shooting fouls to 50 the same as the other foul sliders. Again the default is way too low. This won't make the CPU more likely to foul, it just makes it more likely to call the fouls you should be getting. Though a lot of contact in the paint will still be ignored.

Strategy wise, with these two changes you should get 20+ freethrow attempts in 12min quarters just by playing regularly, but a strong inside game and driving to the basket when appropriate will increase this. For outside shooters, use stutter-step to get your defender to the side of you before you shoot, that way if he jumps to block you it's an automatic foul.

My goodness. That wasn't necessary.

I've noticed a serious lack of getting to the line in my games as well, but that doesn't bother me. :)

Other than adjusting your sliders, the only way to get to the line more is to learn how to draw fouls. Just like in real life, drawing fouls is a learned technique. Just pump fake alot, and use more advance complicated moves and you will get fouled. If all you do is catch and shoot and dunk or whatever, you wont get fouls called. If you want realistic free throw attempts then you have to play realistically as well. NBA players dont just catch the ball under the hoop, and shoot a lay-up; their moves involve multiple fakes.

I dun see pump-faking that useful
when you are playing on higher level the CPU wont buy it,
even if it could be solved lowering the fakeout slider, I consider that a bit cheap
