Did EA Sports mis-label the sliders?

Postby mustafaaab on Tue Oct 25, 2005 10:40 pm

User and computer sliders dont match up, row by row, item by item.

Is everybody having offensive rebounding problems because either the user or computer slider location is not really the offensive rebounding setting?

I discovered this by making a list of all the settings across from each other. They dont match up. My first thought was the user categories are correct, and the computer ones are wrong, or visa versa.

I think the only way to test this possibility is to play the same team vs each other in several computer vs computer games and move these potentially mislabeled sliders around. Dont know when I can test this. If any one does it please post your results.

Can anybody get into the code on the PS2 disk and verify this potential labeling error?

Is there anybody at EA sports that will respond?

Um....CPU sliders aren't suppose to match each User slider available

I'm not from EA but no, they aren't mislabelled. The reason for the slight variations are simple. Some sliders are specific to the human user, others are aspects that apply only to the CPU.

Andrew,

Without seeing the code placement on the disk, or discovering it from trial and error, how do you know this for sure.

Im sorry my HTML table skills are not ready yet but beginning after substitution, the labels dont match. Then at On-Ball Physical defense they match again. This could be a very simple programming error that could end a lot of grief for everybody.

User Sliders
25 - Steal
25 - Intercept
30 – Shot Block
100 – Dunk/Lay-up Block
40 – Freestyle effect
20 – Dunk Frequency
100 - Substitution
100 – On-ball Defense Assist
1 - Offensive Rebounding
100 – Defensive Rebounding
60 – Fakeout Discipline
40 – Short Range Shooting
35 – Medium Range Shooting
30 – Long Range Shooting
25 – Dunk Percentage
30 – Lay-up Percentage
35 – Adjusted Shot Pct.

100 – On ball Physical Defense
25 – Poor Release Shot Pct.
100 – Double Team Effect
40 – Pro Hop Effect
40 – Drop Step Effect

That is because there are some sliders that are specific for the CPU and some that are only for the Users. You're looking way too much into this. Either way, you're the only one who seems to be complaining about this so EA would not be working their asses off unless a barrage of customers were complaining like crazy

U should check this board carefully Null. The biggest complaints I have seen from numerous posters on this and another Live board is "I set Offensive rebounding to 0 or 1 and nothing happened."

They claim this flaw is messing up their dynasty stats and certain players are not getting realistic stats.

Are there liability or recall issues you are concerned about for EA if such a flaw is discovered?

It's not a programming error. There are differences simply because there are some different sliders for the human user and the CPU. This has been the case in previous games and the rebounding issues weren't present in NBA Live 2004 or NBA Live 2005 (the only other two Lives to feature gameplay sliders).

NBA Live 2003 was rumoured to have incorrectly labelled settings - some folks swore that setting the game to Arcade with all the rules on made the game more realistic - but it turned out to be a placebo effect.

Damn, this uncle does sound professional!
Anyway, me too don't think it's a problem.. It had been like this since the first sliders came out 2-3 years ago..

Well I will post my trial and error results as soon as I can. But if there is a programmer on the board who can post and highlight the code proof for the PS2 it would be much appreciated.

In the meantime I have to interchange those settings in question with values of 100 and see what happens.

Ya never know.....In EA's concentration on graphics and other aspect of the game, this tiny little issue could have been an error by a first tier EA programmer.

I wil report back.

It's been like that ever since we had the sliders back. Not all of the sliders have been very effective. It's not a labelling error but more of the sliders ineffectivity. But if you want to waste your time on this, by golly do so.

And while everyone's been complaining about the offensive rebounding slider not working, you're the only one complaining about wrong labelling which was my complaint to begin with.

Andrew,

I clearly remember this Offensive rebounding to be an issue in 2005 and 2004.

I am a dedicated NBA Liver since the first issue.

And still have my original Madden Football box and receipt (1989) when it first came out for the Apple 2 computer. Any offers? :D

Null,

Without you posting code "proof" your argument has limited merit.

As I think about this it could have been the problem all along. We have been setting Offensive rebounds to 0 or 1.....and it wasn't really Offensive rebounds we were changing.

Call it a witch hunt if you like, but I spent my good money, Im a loyal and dedicated fan, and I want it right!

Nothing but a little testing on a Saturday afternoon while I watch college football.

OK. It's not like an EA programmer will pop out somewhere instantly so do what you must. I still think it's a farfetched idea but hey either way I'm getting something out of it.

Well that is a possibility, but the thing is, sometimes the sliders just don't have that much effect. Like last year, even if cranked up offensive reboudns to 100, you'd still have very few offensive rebounds. I think it's the same thing with defensive rebounds/offensive rebounds this year except the other way around. Typical NBA Live mistake. Every time they see something overpowered, they overpower the opposite and end up screwing up.

The sliders sadly don't work as well as the 2k series, which even a few changes in sliders can have pretty drastic changes. Dunno why, maybe they put the ranges the sliders change differently.
Bored.

By now, we all know that the sliders don't work as we think they do. Some sliders don't even work at all as the offensive reb. In fact must of us don't even know what the sliders are suppose to do. I don't understand why EA doesn't release guides explaining what the sliders do. For example, we think that "steal" is suppose to increase players ability to steal but it seems to do more than just that. It makes players play defense closer, it also increase foul frequency, decrease fg %. I have to say that EA is kind of lazy and seems to take the easy way out when it comes to game playing..

If, by your reasoning, one of the user or CPU sliders might be mislabeled, then there is a possibility we're changing the wrong slider. But, if we are witnessing high offensive rebounding by both CPU and users, then your reasoning doesn't match up. If your theory proves correct, then both sliders have to be mislabled.

I have tested the computer offensive rebounding setting by letting computer play computer (Knicks vs Knicks) with Defensive Rebounds set at 100 and Offensive Rebounds at 1.

The results were in accordance with NBA statistics, 2-1, 3-1, even 4-1 Defensive board vs Offensive board ratios. Boards increased when playing a 2-3 Shifting Zone, but open outside shots also increased, causing losses.

Conclusion the "computer" rebound sliders do indeed work.

The Jury is still out on the "User" rebound sliders; but preliminary indications are that they work also; pending further investigation...... :?:

I don't. Offensive rebounds are far more numerous in NBA Live 06 compared to both NBA Live 2004 and NBA Live 2005, even with default sliders.

i don't recall ever in Live 04 getting past 15offensive rebounds in a game. I loved that. In 06 though, w/o trying i still get rebounds.

After playing a whole season, my stats are more realistic. Myself and CPU included average about 15 offensive per game. Problem is that most of the time an offensive rebound = 2 points. I wish the CPU would reset a play at times, instead of driving to the hole.

User Rebound Settings:

It appears that they work to the same efficiency as computer rebound settings. It appears the play called, your controlled players ratings, position around the boards, box out efficiency, and jump timing, have a lot to do with the effectiveness of your defensive or offensive rebounds.

Therefore, in my conclusion, setting offensive rebounds to 0 or 1 and defensive rebounds to 100 or 99 should help bring statistics within NBA league averages, if, you also possess and perform the above skills and techniques. 8-) (Y)

I strongly encourage all of you to file a claim against EA for putting out miserable and subpar products just because there isn't too much competition out there yet. File a claim guys and get your money back!
