Australia with Andrew Bogut, Chris Anstey, Brad Newley, CJ Bruton, whats his name thats nominated for the draft (Bruce I believe), Anderson that plays for CSKA in Russia, Joe Ingles, Sam Mackinnon.

Possibly New Zealand as well. They've got a few good players in the American college ranks, not to mention Sean (?) Marks.

Tue May 01, 2007 8:03 pm

New Zealand has NBA grade talent in C Sean Marks & SG Kirk Penney....they have former UNLV All-American Honorable Mention talent PG Mark Dickel....they have really talented players who have played in Europe like SG Phill Jones and very undersized PF Pero Cameron....they have a defensive dynamite who plays in the Aussie league in SF Dillon Boucher....they have top college (former now) talent in PF/C Craig Bradshaw....they got other scrubbers like C Tony Rampton, PG Paul Henare & Canadian born SG Aaron Olsen....they got more players around, probably more college players, I just don't know who they are....

I knew they had a lot of depth, just couldn't recall the names. Aren't the Kiwi's ranked top 6 in the world at the moment?

Tue May 01, 2007 8:20 pm

1. USA 832.0
2. ARG 720.0
3. ESP 619.0
4. YUG* 508.0
5. LTU 460.0
6. GRE 429.0
7. ITA 418.0
8. FRA 343.0
9. GER 282.0
10. AUS 279.0
11. CHN 262.0
12. NZL 228.0

Way off. They just haven't quite clicked recently. I suppose it was about the Sweet...er, final sixteen placing they achieved at the world champs last year.

Where is that ranking from? Because I was confident that the US was no longer #1, and how can Yugoslavia be listed since it hasn't existed since the collapse of the Soviet regime there in the early 1990's.

http://www.fiba.com/pages/en/misc/ranki ... pn_id=178&

Unless FIBA opened a new site, I think that might be it.

The number 12 ranking is very fair for New Zealand. You look at the eleven teams above them & they aren't better than any of the....sure on their day they can beat Serbia, Italy, China & regularly beat Aussies about 40% of time these days, it seems fair....they are above teams like Brazil & Croatia, which is solid....

but yeah, those rankings seem skewed....US hasn't won a tournament since 2000 Olympics & they're top....I'd expect Argentina to be top, maybe Spain 2nd, USA 3rd, then Lithuania 4th, Serbia 5th, the next 4 are pretty fair....although I think teams like Nigeria are miles better than their rankings....If NZ can stay in top 10-15 long term & get the occasional top 8 finish, then it's good for the sport in NZ....helps the grassroots....

Not true,I believe Yugoslavia was meant to be Serbia in those rankings, because of the flag and everything. They just didn't bother to change it.And Yugoslavia did exist till the 2000's,because the only two former country's from Yugoslavia (Serbia & Montenegro which are today separate country's ) called them selfs Yugoslavia, until they changed their name to Serbia & Montenegro.

I know this stuff,I'm from that area myself  .

I was under the impression they called themselves the Former Yugoslav Republic which they used to be abbreviated to FYR for sporting events. May be wrong, just doesn't seem to make a lot of sense though.

With the World Basketball Championship rolling up USA officials announced that Don Nelson would be taking control of the USA basketball team. After being an asst. coach to the gold winning team in 1994, Nelson was asked to be Head Coach this year. Nelson honored and commented on the subject, "As a kid you want to play as one of the greats on the USA basketball team, but actually be able to coach those great players is even better. I can't wait to start." Still no announcements have bene made on asst. coaches or players. It was noted that maybe Avery Johnson would asst. Nelson as he did back in the Dallas days of Nelson. There was also sources saying that there could be two to six college players on the USA basketball team. Don Nelson has a lifetime .573 winning percentage. Nelson is the second most winningest coach in the NBA.
