K0beStar, man, in what grade are u studying? that's a 5-th or 6-th out of 11 grade in basic Russian school! i've no idea what could u do or ask if u'd go to Russian University?! wtf!

When you do algebra, you should know the formulas for several equations. In this example, area of a rectangle(or square, whatever).
20a^2 - 21a - 5 is a not a perfect square trinomial. But you can see here that this equation can be multiplied by two equations that have the variable "a" in it. So what you do is to think of numbers that would produce a product of 20 (that numeric variable in 20a^2). Hence 4 and 5. Note that all terms have a negative sign (-), so the factors have a "+" and a "-" to have a negative product.
wade_03 answered (4a-5)(5a+1) as factors. Note that 4a and 5a are factors of 20a^2. and -5 multiplied by 1 is negative 5. Upon inspecting the given equation 20a^2 - 21a - 5, the only problem is the middle term, in which I think you already know.
Your professor tricked you with the question. Your topic here could be division of polynomials. Once you found out the factors (one of them given, which is 4a-5), you can come up with an answer.
My advice: take up engineering for more mathematics overdose

Ah i remember those days....Algebra 1. The retarded thing was that after we had a quiz we were allowed to correct it and get the points back so i always got As.
Then i got to Algebra 2 and started getting Bs thanks to the class starting at 7:30.

lolz..algebra was cake, algebra 2 was some more cake..pre-cal and stats were just plain boring..geometry wasnt too bad either..cake too i guess

Algebra is easy except those fucking graphs. I'm taking geometry as a freshman in High School and it's much better and easier than algebra.
