Milan reportedly makes Ronaldo bid
MADRID, Spain (AP) -- AC Milan representatives on Wednesday offered Real Madrid $28.1 million for Brazilian striker Ronaldo, sports daily Marca said.
The bid made by vice president Adriano Galliani and general manager Ariedo Braida is said to be $3.8 million less than Madrid's asking price for the three-time FIFA Player of the Year.
Galliani and Braida, who were to watch Madrid's preseason match with Anderlecht at Santiago Bernabeu stadium, are hoping to complete the negotiations before they return to Italy, Marca added.
However, Madrid president Ramon Calderon told TV channel Cuatro he wanted to speak to Ronaldo before taking a decision.
"This won't be resolved tonight," Calderon said. "The first thing is find out what the player thinks. In principle, he would like to stay."
Ronaldo couldn't play in Wednesday's game due to his recovery from a knee injury. He also was expected to miss Madrid's opening Spanish league match against Villarreal on Sunday.
Calderon indicated on Tuesday he would be interested in trading Ronaldo for Milan's attacking midfielder Kaka, whose arrival he promised in campaigning for Madrid's presidency in July.
But Galliani told Italy's Sky TV before boarding a plane for Madrid: "Kaka is not for sale."
However, Marca reported that Madrid may negotiate as part of any transfer for Ronaldo a first option on Kaka.
Ronaldo reportedly is unsettled because he may lose his place in Madrid's first 11 to recent acquisition Ruud van Nistelrooy.
The Brazilian, who has two years left on his contract, threatened to leave last season after being regularly jeered by fans attending Madrid's home games.
Ronaldo, who turns 30 next month, spent five years in Milan with rival Inter before joining Madrid in 2002. He helped Madrid win the Spanish league in his first season but since then the club has won nothing in its longest streak without silverware since the early 1950s.
