SEATTLE (AP) – Allen Iverson couldn’t wait to make his Seattle Stealth debut and thanks to an uncharacteristic game from Reshawn Tyson, the 37 year old got to make his impact earlier than expected.
Early foul trouble for Tyson meant that Iverson, acquired yesterday in a deal with the New York Knicks, was able to make his Seattle debut in front of a sold out arena. Iverson made the most of his opportunity as he keyed a 12-2 run in the middle of the first quarter. Prior to entering the game, the home team was trailing the Nets 10-2. “I just wanted to be aggressive,” Iverson said after the game, “I wanted to prove that I can still play and I will play hard off the bench. I love basketball. I love Seattle.”
The good vibes didn’t last as Iverson went cold after the end of the first period. He didn’t add onto his tally of 9 points until late in the game; he would only add a three pointer and finish with 12 points in his first game as a member of the Stealth. Iverson’s cold streak coincided with the Nets’ push to make their lead a double digit one. New Jersey led by as many as 19 points in the second quarter. Stealth back up PG Aaron Karl kept his team in it as he came off the bench and made three big three pointers in the second and third quarters.
NBA leading scorer Kevin Durant scored 24 second half points and single handily led his side back into the contest. Andrew Bogut scored 10 third quarter points while Tyson added 9 in the final quarter. Durant boasted about how his team turned a double digit deficit into a seemingly easy win whilst having a dig at Nets SF Carmelo Anthony who finished with a game high 35 points, “My team was focused. I told them to get the job done and they did it. This is what a real leader does. I don’t need to try and I still get to 28 points. If I tried as hard as Carmelo, I would score 50 every night.”
Notes: Nets C DJ Schmidt grabbed a career high 20 rebounds… Jason Kidd had 7 assists… Tyson had 4 personal fouls by the middle of the second quarter. He declined to talk to reporters after the game… Iverson finished with 12 points, 2 assists on 4 for 9 shooting from the field. He sank 2 three pointers. Iverson on the Stealth jerseys, “I always thought they were ugly but it’s a whole different feeling when you put it on. They’re really ugly.”
