You should consider the Philippines a strong team with Julian Martin and Kenneth Dela Cruz. :P

You forgot all about Zoilo Resuereccion. And I got you guys qualifying though Asia but don't think you will go far in the Games. :P

Go Germany, Go Germany. Actually it's a shame that you do not have Elias Harris in this one. He's the best Zag right now and also plays for the German squad. I guess he is just not fictional enough :D

Probably not. After the debacle that was the World Champs, I think you & I (or at least I) were considering international retirement. Let's see if I change my mind :P

Ah well, Florian Ruf will have to do. :P

Since the IOC has been asked by FIBA to allow 16 teams in instead of 12, it raises the number of teams from Oceania to 2... so Aus and NZ both get to make it... according to the Wikipedia page... as for outloook, both Boomers and Tall Blacks are in the middle of the pack...

2012 London Olympic Games – Men’s Basketball

Basketball Draw and Schedule Announced

July 20, 2012

LONDON (AP) – The International Olympic Committee agreed to raise the number of teams to compete in the Men’s Basketball at the 2012 London Games to 16 teams, 4 more than the 12 team format from past Games. This has resulted in a change in the structure of the basketball competition; it will mirror the Men’s Football. The 16 teams have been drawn into four groups. Each team plays each other twice during the group stage before the top two teams of each group advance to a playoff for the gold medal.

The groups are as follows:

Group A China, Latvia, Nigeria, United States of America
Group B Australia, France, Italy, Lithuania
Group C Angola, Brazil, Germany, United Kingdom
Group D Argentina, New Zealand, Philippines, Spain

The United Kingdom opens the tournament with their game against Brazil at 9 am on July 28. The rest of the schedule can be found here.

Moses Chara: Can’t Wait To Play

July 26, 2012

LONDON (AP) – With one day until the 2012 London Olympic Games Opening Ceremony, Team USA forward Moses Chara voiced his thoughts loud and clear. “We (Team USA) are the team to beat in this tournament. I’m very certain to say that we are going to win this pretty easily,” Chara boasted, “The medal is ours to lose. I don’t see any other team close to our level.”

Chara added, “I just can’t wait to play. This is going to be a great tournament.” He also answered a question on whether he was happy to play alongside Western Conference rival Kevin Durant, to which he answered, “Firstly, I am just happy that no one else from his team (Seattle Stealth) made Team USA. No one else on that team deserved to. Secondly, why did you single him out? Durant ain’t all that. Most of the dudes on this team (Team USA) are my rivals in the NBA.”

Other Teams Predict An Upset

July 26, 2012

LONDON (AP) – Other basketball teams are predicting a Team USA implosion that would lead to an underwhelming Olympics performance from the new ‘Dream Team’. Team USA’s roster has received a chorus of criticism since it was announced with many labeling the side as too much ego and a ticking time bomb ready to explode at any second.

“They have talent but they also have big heads. There’s only one basketball and there are just so many dominant personalities in that group that it’s hard for me to see them functioning,” New Zealand SG Andrew Watson stated. His teammate Mark Moore added, “2008 was a different story. That team really bonded well but just having Kevin Durant and Moses Chara on the same team after their Western Conference Final. That’s what I call a bad idea.”

German PG Chris Hova stated, “We have Dirk (Nowitzki) and the rest of us just fall back into our roles to support him. Who is the Team USA go-to-guy? People argue that that is what makes them so good when they can have so many weapons on the floor. But having more sometimes makes less in the end.”

“I know that it has worked before in 1992,” Spanish C/F Pau Gasol says, “But that team had a lot of talented passers. Team USA now has a lot of great scorers but there’s no one that can really pass. There’s also no one except Chris Paul who plays with a passing mentality. They’re still a tough team to play but I think we (Spain) can beat them.”

“I’ve got to be honest,” Australian C Andrew Bogut explained, “Team USA will probably either go all the way and win by big numbers or they will fizzle out in the semi finals. I can see it happening. Basketball isn’t played on paper. They have a great roster on paper but I have serious doubts about whether they can walk the walk.”

Argentina’s SG Manu Ginobili called out Moses Chara whom he had played against in the 2012 NBA Finals, “Chara talks too much. He should just concentrate on playing.”

2012 London Olympic Games – Men’s Basketball

United States End Group Stage Undefeated

August 4, 2012

LONDON (AP) – Moses Chara scored three pointer after three pointer over the Latvians while LeBron James and Dwight Howard kept swatting shots into the stands. The United States had six players (Chara, James, Jay Gray, Kobe Bryant, Carmelo Anthony, Gilbert Arenas) in double figures and cruised to a massive 115-66 victory against Latvia.

The result was silence in Basketball Arena and an undefeated record still intact. “I didn’t think it was possible to get the amount of points we did tonight,” Chara said after the game. Chara finished with a game high 33 points and shot 7 for 9 from behind the arc. James, who was second best with 14 points, boasted, “I don’t think anyone can come in and say that we aren’t the best team on the planet right now.”

In the other Group A game, the Chinese struggled mightily against the energy and athleticism of Nigeria. In his last Olympic Games, Yao Ming fouled out early in the fourth quarter. Nigeria was to hold out for a close 71-63 victory. The win meant that the Nigerians were shock quarterfinalists after taking tie breakers and points difference into account. Nigerian PG, 2012 NBA second overall pick, and Yao’s future teammate with the Rockets Ifeayi Ndiaye explained, “It was important that we made sure we had a good points difference. We pride ourselves on our defense. Defense got us through to the next round.”

The young Nigerian was also happy to be playing in front of many of his friends and family, “This is a dream come true for me to come and play at the Olympic Games. I have a lot of family here as well as friends. They helped me get through all of the games.” Nigeria garnered worldwide attention as they ‘held’ the United States to their two lowest scoring totals of the Games so far with 72 and 76 points.

Group A Results

    1. United States (6-0)
    2. Nigeria (2-4)
    3. China (2-4)
    4. Latvia (2-4)

Aussies, Italians Through To Quarterfinals

August 5, 2012

LONDON (AP) – Lady Luck smiled upon Italy as Andrew Bogut’s tip in rolled in at the final buzzer for Australia. Australia’s 71-70 final second win against Lithuania did not only seal a spot in the next round for the Aussies but also helped Italy advance after France defeated the Italians for their first win of the Games.

Bogut’s 25 points and New Jersey Nets SG Jeremy Mason’s 18 helped the Australians to defeat the Lithuanians and deny the country a top four finish at the Olympics for the first time since 1992. “This was a huge win,” Bogut said afterwards, “Lithuania is such a good side. Anything could have happened today. I am very lucky that the ball decided to finally drop.”

Australia will be pleasantly surprised with their quarterfinal opponent as they will face off against African minnows Nigeria. Italy drew the short stick as they prepare for the Americans. The Italians know that in order for an upset over the USA, they cannot play like they did against the French. NBA players Marco Belinelli, Danilo Gallinari, and Andrea Bargnani were non-factors for much of the game and will need to step up in the next game.

Group B Results

    1. Australia (4-2)
    2. Italy (4-2)
    3. Lithuania (3-3)
    4. France (1-5)

United Kingdom Bow Out In Group Stage

August 4, 2012

LONDON (AP) – Luol Deng, Ben Gordon, and their fans could not help the United Kingdom get out of the Group Stage for the men’s basketball at the 2012 London Games. England had a thrilling final game in front of the pro-UK crowd but just could not push past Brazil for the second spot in the quarterfinals. Deng scored 31 points and Gordon added 15 in the exciting 67-63 overtime loss to Brazil.

The UK needed to win their final group match against the South Americans in order to advance to the next stage. That was achievable considering the fact that the side had beaten Brazil earlier in the tournament. Unfortunately, Brazil’s Leandro Barbosa was determined to help his side to the next round and he finished the game with 22 points. Andersen Varejao added 16 points and 14 rebounds while European star Tiago Splitter put up 15.

Germany proved that they have a strong side but know that the draw is not in their favor as they are slated to meet the United States in the semifinals if they beat the second placed team from Group D. Dallas Mavericks PF Dirk Nowitki says that his team is not afraid of the United States, “They are always the favorites so of course we will meet them eventually. Whether it is quarters, semis, or the gold medal match. Maybe we will be the ones who take them out.”

Group C Results

    1. Germany (5-1)
    2. Brazil (4-2)
    3. United Kingdom (3-3)
    4. Angola (0-6)

New Zealand Take Advantage Of Ginobili Absence Again

August 5, 2012

LONDON (AP) – The New Zealand ‘Tall Blacks’ can have their schedule and Rudy Fernandez to thank for making the quarterfinals. Despite having been beaten comprehensively by Spain in two outings, the Kiwis were able to win the rest of their games to make the second stage of the Olympic basketball competition.

Atlanta Hawk and NBA Finals MVP Manu Ginobili was hurt in Argentina’s first game against Spain after a hard hit from Cleveland Cavs SG Fernandez. It has also put the start of Ginobili’s NBA season in doubt. New Zealand, at that stage, had not played a game against Argentina and took full advantage of the South Americans missing their leading scorer. Ginobili had scored a 28 against the Philippines and had 14 points after two quarters of play before he was stretchered off the court. Spain dropped the game in which Ginobili was hurt but reasserted their dominance in their second game against Argentina; winning by 28 points. New Zealand beat the Manu-less Argentines by 15 a few nights later.

Spain is looking like strong gold medal contenders as the competition heats up. Ricky Rubio and Marc Gasol have helped the team immensely with Pau Gasol struggling with fatigue. Rubio’s triple double of 13 points, 12 rebounds, and a tournament high 15 assists helped the side finish the group stage with an encouraging 88-41 demolition of the Philippines.

Spain plays Brazil and New Zealand plays Germany in the next stage.

Group D Results

    1. Spain (5-1)
    2. New Zealand (4-2)
    3. Argentina (3-3)
    4. Philippines (0-6)
